Mortimer Smith
(Jamestown, NY, 1840 - 1896, Detroit, MI)
Smith was born in Jamestown, New York, and educated in Oberlin and Sandusky, Ohio. His only formal artistic training was in his father's Academy of Design, housed in the same building as the Cosmopolitan Art Association; the building was designed by Smith's father, who was an architect as well as an art teacher. After the family moved to Detroit, Michigan, in 1855, Smith joined his father's flourishing architectural practice, but continued to paint as well.
