It looks and sounds a little like a guitar, but this musical instrument is called a lute. The painting hanging in this case shows a lady getting ready to play a lute. How many strings does this lute have?

We heard many types of music during the Renaissance, just like you do today. The lute was one of several new instruments that allowed ordinary people to learn to play, not only professional musicians.
