1941 Presentation Print of the Print Club of Rochester.

Leighton was one of the finest engravers of her time. Born in London, England, she graduated from the Slade School of Art and also attended the Central School of Arts and Crafts in London. She learned wood engraving during a revival of the craft and had access to skilled masters. Leighton began her career reproducing prints in several English publications, and simultaneously developed her work during sketching trips to France, Italy and the Balkans. In 1939 she immigrated to the United States, where she exhibited and lectured widely and won numerous commissions. She was most well-known for writing and illustrating over 65 books reflecting on agricultural lifestyle and the contrasts of urban modernization. Leighton taught at Duke University, lectured at the National Academy of Design and received honorary Doctor of Fine Arts from Colby College in Waterville, Maine.
