Bouguereau began his career as a portraitist, but moved on to religious paintings and subjects from classical antiquity. Toward the end of the 1860s, he again changed course, specializing in pictures of children and idealized peasant women. Washerwomen of Fouesnant, dated 1869, is one of his early works in these genres, for which he became internationally recognized.
