This man was a significant public figure in ancient Roman society. His toga—the traditional status garment symbolic of Roman citizenship—the scroll in his hand, and the box of scrolls at his feet mark his high status. He may have been one of the 300 Roman Senators who addressed important matters of civic law, religious practice, or foreign policy, all aspects of Roman life controlled by the Senate.

Purchased in Italy in 1829 and brought to England by Richard Temple-Grenville, First Duke of Buckingham and Chandos (1776-1839); to his son, Richard Temple-Grenville, Second Duke of Buckingham and Chandos (1797-1861); his sale, Stowe House, Buckinghamshire, August 15 – October 7, 1848, as lot 31 on October 3; purchased at that sale by Alexander Hamilton, 10th Duke of Hamilton (1767-1852); by descent through his family; sold by them shortly before 1925; Spink and Son, Ltd., London (dealer), ca. 1929; Joseph Brummer, New York (dealer); his sale, Parke-Bernet, NY, part II, May 11-14, 1949, as no. 208A; purchased at that sale by Dr. and Mrs. Norman C. Armitage, Spartanburg, NC; purchased from them by the Gallery in 1973
