Maud Humphrey

(Rochester, NY, 1865 - 1940)

Maud Humphrey was Humphrey Bogart's mother. She lived in Rochester until she was 18, at which time she went to New York to study at the Art Student's League and then to Paris. She married Belmont Bogart in 1898. They lived in New York and summered at Seneca Point on the coast of Canandaigua Lake. Humphrey was famous for her children's book illustrations and covers for magazines. She excelled in watercolor and most often painted idealized children.
