In April of 1921, Emily Sibley Watson commissioned this portrait of her young grandson from the prominent New York City painter Irving Ramsey Wiles for $1,500. She lent it to Wiles’ one-man exhibition here at MAG the following month.

Bibliography
This portrait was sold April 27, 1921, presumably commissioned by Michael Watson's parents, Dr. James Sibley Watson, Jr., and Hildegarde Lasell Watson, for Michael's grandmother, Emily Sibley Watson. An article from a local newspaper in the Gallery's scrapbook indicates that this painting was on view in the Memorial Art Gallery sometime in May, 1921.
