Schaechter engraves her images into flash glass, a handblown sheet of clear glass with a thin layer of brightly colored glass on one side. One of her most significant innovations is the use of a flat diamond file, which she began using in 2002 to achieve soft tonal transitions. A Ship on Her Shoulder
is an example of her early mastery of this extremely effective but also physically taxing technique, which she achieves with many small but firmly applied repetitive motions of the file over the glass.
The origin of this image came from Schaechter’s humorous take on the classic Art Test
, the art school advertisement, found in the back of comic books, that promised to judge one’s artistic abilities. Ultimately, Schaechter’s figure morphed into a female pirate who carries a ship (chip?) on her shoulder.
