The figure’s pose in Widow embodies yearning, and as is often the case in Schaechter’s images, the background or setting reflects the mental state of the character. Here, it could be described as tumultuous and potentially post-apocalyptic. A wreath has been tossed out to sea, as though in mourning for a long-lost mariner husband.
Schaechter engraved these rolling, evocative clouds into three layers of glass: red, blue, and yellow. To capture the sensation of whooshing wind, the artist modified an image of a marble pattern, stretching it in Photoshop before turning it into a photo stencil used to sandblast the glass.
