Although acquired by the museum six years apart, these two sculptures [this piece and 49.6] once belonged to the same monumental architectural group on the exterior of a church. They represent an apostle and an angel, both of whom gaze upward. They were probably part of a larger program focusing on the Ascension of Christ, which would have shown the central figure of Christ flanked at either side by witnesses to the sacred event.
