Schaechter chose to celebrate the life of her deceased cat, Didi, with a New Orleans–style jazz funeral. As a lifelong animal lover and doting owner of many cats throughout her life, the artist inexplicably did not bond with Didi in life. This panel was made as atonement for her lack of grief at the cat’s passing.
Drawing from Russian images of a
cat funeral conducted by a procession of mice, Schaechter made linoleum-cut images of mice in small, medium, and large sizes, and printed them onto the glass using vitreous paint. This piece is unusual in Schaechter’s body of work as she typically favors the copper-foil technique to assemble her glass panels, rather than the older leading technique she used here.
