Schaechter is continually seeking new strategies for representing human bodies. She has looked to varied sources, such as anatomical diagrams, maps, and even game boards. For this work, she was inspired by the early twentieth-century Surrealist invention “
the exquisite corpse,” in which multiple artists would draw elements of a single body on folded paper without knowing what their collaborators had drawn. In the spirit of chance and unpredictability embraced by the Surrealists, Schaechter employed perhaps more improvisation than she normally would in her version of an exquisite corpse.
