This piece, included in the Whitney Biennial 2002, was a technical experiment: the entire work is composed of three layers of glass. The visual elements of the spiral and speech balloons allowed the artist to divide up the surface with the copper foil and solder used to assemble her glass, but they also serve the narrative. The spiral line and dense pattern reference a dizzying and disorienting episode of bed spins experienced by a drunken clown. The question mark and “alas” indicate the clown’s general befuddlement.
