As human sweat leaves a recognizable patina or surface appearance on wood, evidence of use is visible on the back of this mask. It was likely performed by males in Marka men’s association (jow). These masquerades are performed to help coordinate community labor projects, provide entertainment to the public and teach young men how to take on their adult responsibilities.
