Commissioned from the artist, executed in Italy
Installation report, William Sellers, Rochester, NY, 4/29/87: "General statement: The installation work consisted of having a new steel base fabricated to replace the badly corroded original base, painting the new base, supporting and attached the base at the selected site and attaching the sculpture to the base. The new base was fabricated of 12 ga. mild steel to the same dimensions as the original base at Genesee Welding Works, N. Washington Street, Rochester. The finishing system used on the base consisted of paint manufactured by Sherwin Williams Company, Cleveland, Ohio, a heavy-duty maintenance system consisting of one coat of Kromik Metal Primer #E41N1, top-coated with two coats of Metalastic II enamel, series B53, Ebony MC-72. The base, a hollow box form, open underneath, is supported above grade by four cylindrical concrete piers topped with pieces of pressure-treated 2 x 6 lumber just inside the 4 corners. At two opposite corners, NW and SE, the base is anchored by 3/8" diameter stainless steel flathead screws screwed into caulking anchors set in the tops of the concrete piers, the heads of the screws were filled with fiberglass putty sanded and touched up with the same paint used on the base. The bronze sculpture is attached to the steel base from underneath at the three contact points using stainless steel bolts that screw directly into threaded holes in bronze straps that had been welded to the bottom interior of the sculpture. Stainless steel bolts and washers were used to prevent electrolytic corrosion between the bronze and the steel base. For the same reason, neoprene gaskets were cut to shape and placed between the bottom of the sculpture and the steel base.
