Horse Sense is dominated by an empty article of Native American clothing, standing at once for the artist’s tradition and for the systematic vitiation of that tradition over the past three centuries. Smith’s images and text represent the authentic Native American culture as well as stereotypes from the mainstream culture. Standing proudly atop the shirt is a potent symbol, a horse with a heartline that represents the powerful life force of the animal and perhaps suggests the persistence of native wisdom in spite of efforts to destroy it.
