"Paul et Virginie" was a novel written by Jacque-Henri Bernardin de Saint-Pierre (1737 - 1814), first published in 1788. Jean-Frédéric Schall (1752 - 1825) created a set of six designs to illustrate this book for the 1797 edition. Prints were made of these designs by Descourtis.
