Karl Kipp worked in the Roycroft community, first in the bookbindery and then in the copper shop. By 1910, he was head of the copper shop. The design of this vase was heavily influenced by the Wiener Werkstette style - simple shape, minimal design, and geometric patterning. The Roycroft "R" is incorporated into the applied silver motif on the front of the vase.
