Bragdon’s Mathematical Abstractions is a set of images based on mathematical relationships and suggestive of cosmic forms in the solar system. This series grew out of Bragdon’s continued interest in uniting color, form, and music.
The series was exhibited in 1941-42 in Hartford, New York City, and finally in Rochester at the Memorial Art Gallery, where Bragdon’s patrons, Dr. and Mrs. James Sibley Watson, agreed to purchase this one for MAG. Bragdon wrote about the gift to Isabel Herdle, MAG curator, in 1944: “It is the one which your sister [Gertrude Herdle Moore, MAG director] and Fritz [Trautmann] decided would be best and which was also settled upon by Mrs. Watson and myself.”
The Mathematical Abstraction series was best described by the artist in the 1941-42 exhibition brochure:
"These fifteen water-color paintings represent the final distillation of Mr. Bragdon’s creative ability in a field which he has made his own. Although susceptible of classification as non-representational, or non-objective art, they are unique by reason of the fact that Mr. Bragdon is a skilled mathematician and geometer as well as an artist. He does not wish these paintings to be viewed, however, from any other standpoint than that of their intrinsic beauty—their purely aesthetic appeal. He believes that mathematical truth is at the root of all beauty, and that in the same sense that music may be said to be the beauty of mathematics made audible, so are these paintings mathematics made visible. After having made many hundred drawings, Mr. Bragdon made the paintings here and now exhibited, which from one point of view might be regarded as so many 'stills' of color symphonies seen by the author 'in his mind’s eye.'
One of the pioneers in the new art of Color Music, Mr. Bragdon has from far back employed his spare time and his spare money in the construction of one “color-organ” after another, in which it was his idea to add luminosity, color, rhythm, mobility, to his designs derived from mathematical sources. Convinced, after many failures, that the most satisfactory way in which this might be accomplished was by the animated cartoon technique, he made a study of it with this in view, and tried to interest the moving picture people in his idea. None of them were prepared, however, to invest the necessary amount of money in what they regarded as an uncertain venture. Walt Disney, meantime, a free agent, with the means at his disposal, had gone ahead and in certain parts of “Fantasia”—notably in the “sound-track” sequence—approximated some of the color-music effects which Mr. Bragdon had had in mind."

Decorative Arts
Like philosophers and artists before him, Claude Bragdon sought a sacred geometry of cosmic significance and harmonious design. In his 1915 book Projective Ornament he outlined a modern, universal system of design based on numbers and geometry abstracted from nature. Bragdon’s beliefs in Theosophy influenced his use of the fourth dimension in creating his ornament. He believed in the fourth dimension as a mystical hyperspace that explained some of the mysteries of life and the afterlife. Bragdon based his new ornamental style on a complex system of projecting and manipulating two-dimensional shapes such as squares and triangles into four-dimensional shapes such as tesseracts and pentahedroids.
In September of 1915, Claude Bragdon helped organize the Song and Light Festival, a community-building public singing event held in Highland Park. As Master of Light, Bragdon used projective ornament to design colorful circular glass shields and Japanese-style lanterns that he artfully arranged around the stage. Lit by electricity, Bragdon’s projective ornament designs created an otherworldly outdoor environment likened to a “cathedral without walls.”
Bragdon was intensely absorbed and inspired by this new endeavor in which he could aid progressive social reform using his passion for color, light, drama and modern ornament. The popularity of the Rochester festival soon spread to other cities in the northeast, and Bragdon was involved in staging Song and Light Festivals through 1918.

If you approached 50 West Main Street in Rochester late in the 19th century, you would have seen this figure standing in front of the tobacco shop located there. So that no one would miss the point that tobacco products were sold inside, it was purchased to stand outside and advertise the shop’s wares. The carving included stylized tobacco leaves and a tobacco box held in the figure’s outstretched right hand.
Carvers capitalized early on the relationship between Native Americans and the tobacco that they grew for sacred practices. Carvings of Native Americans were used by the 18th century in British tobacco shops, reflecting the growth of the transatlantic trade. With laws restricting sidewalk signs, and the decline of tobacco shops due to public health awareness, the once-ubiquitous cigar store Indian has become a rarity.

1900-2000, 20th century, from Rochester collections, sculpture
Sculpture
Alexander Calder was one of the most important and influential sculptors of the twentieth century. He is best known for his mobiles, kinetic or moving sculptures usually painted in black and the primary colors of red, yellow, and blue.
Calder’s sculptures delight people of all ages for their charm, whimsy, and grace. If this mobile, with its rather bulky counter-weight, seems less graceful than some of Calder’s others, it may be because it is one of the earliest of his mobiles made for the outdoors. Created in 1935 of iron rather than the artist’s typical sheet metal, it is a very rare and relatively large early example. Soon after this, Calder would work in metal far less frequently. As the U.S. geared up for the World War II effort, metal became a very scarce material.
This sculpture was given to the Memorial Art Gallery by Charlotte Whitney Allen, who commissioned it in 1934 for her garden on Oliver Street in Rochester.

1800-1900, 19th century, Cupid, from Rochester collections, sculpture
Sculpture
When Rochester businessman and art collector Daniel Powers brought this piece home from the Centennial Exposition in Philadelphia in 1876, it made local headlines. One newspaper article admired its “grace and life-likeness rarely met with in modern composition.” The sculpture was on view at Powers’ own gallery downtown for many years, for an admission charge of $.25. Cantalamessa-Papotti also made a portrait of Powers and the monuments for the families of Rochester nurserymen Ellwanger and Barry, at Mt. Hope and Holy Sepulchre cemeteries.
Interpretations of the figures vary: the Powers Gallery catalogue identified the subject as Cupid giving a girl her first lesson in love by means of a mirror, but the figures may in fact be Cupid with his mother Venus, who is often shown holding a mirror. Mythological and allegorical characters were beloved of academic artists, who could illustrate an abstract quality such as vanity while demonstrating their prowess at depicting the human figure.

Gideon Webster Burbank, Sr., 1863
Born May 24, 1803 - died March 4, 1873 (Rochester, NY)
The artist, William Cogswell, was born in upstate New York and taught himself portrait painting in the 1830s. He worked as a professional artist in New York City and exhibited at the National Academy and the American Art-Union. His best-known work is a portrait of Abraham Lincoln in the White House Collection. His portraits also include Presidents Grant and McKinley.
The portraits of Mr. and Mrs. Burbank were conserved by a Henry Luce Foundation Conservation Grant.

The portraits of Mr. and Mrs. Burbank provide an unparalleled way of standing ‘face to face’ with early generations of Americans – those people who lived before Kodak gave us the snapshot.
Gideon Webster Burbank was educated in New York City and established a dry goods business in Kendall, NY in 1824. The following year he married Mary Goodrich and she bore eleven children. In 1839, after the Erie Canal was completed, Mr. Burbank started a career in Rochester as a manufacturer of flour at the Frankfort Mills. His mill sent barrels of flour to London as Rochester’s exhibit in the first World’s Fair in 1851. In the late 1850s, he designed and operated the steamer “Fulton” which made trips between Rochester and Buffalo on the Erie Canal. In 1869, he became a partner in the firm of Richardson, Burbank & Company, owners of the New York Flour Mills. He also served as president and director of several banks, and as a trustee of the First Baptist church.
Mr. Burbank was one of the earliest and most generous supporters of the University of Rochester and served on its Board of Trustees for nineteen years. In 1854, when the University was just four years old, he established the “Gideon Webster Burbank Professorship of Intellectual and Moral Philosophy.” His gift of $20,000 was, until that point, the largest single donation and helped inspire confidence in the long-term success of the University. He later suffered great financial loss, but remained proud of his connection to the University, saying “That I have saved.”
The Burbank family plot is located in Mt. Hope Cemetery.

Painting
Colin Campbell Cooper wrote an essay in 1911 where he recommended his wife’s home town of Rochester as a subject for artists: “Rochester is filled with subjects which need no other idealization to make beautiful than an eye receptive to the glory of light and color and the ability to register these things on canvas.” Here, the artist’s receptive eye captured from a northeast angle downtown’s Main Street Bridge in contrasting colors of warm brick and the cool water. The shops and offices on the Main Street Bridge over the Genesee River illustrate Rochester’s commercial boom in this era, where every inch of space was needed to support the businesses of the central city.

architecture in art, art with Rochester connections, by Rochester artists, from Rochester collections
Painting
American-born painter Colin Campbell Cooper infused life into his paintings with an impressionist’s sense of air and light. After training in Philadelphia and Paris, he married fellow-artist and Rochester native Emma Lampert and the couple travelled around Europe and much of the world. Cooper painted subjects ranging from the Taj Mahal in India to the Main Street Bridge in Rochester, and was represented in MAG’s inaugural exhibition in 1913.

Hiram Wesley Dixon, Born circa 1817- died Dec. 1, 1888 (Tarrytown, NY)
Hiram, Angeline and daughter, Sophia Josephine Dixon portraits are not signed or dated. We believe all three were painted by the same artist, Jefferson Gauntt. The Dixon family’s life dates have been obtained through research. Based on these dates we speculate the portraits were painted between 1840 and 1860.
Tombstone, Oct. 2010, Colleen Piccone
The Dixon family lived north of New York City, first in Hudson, NY and then in Tarrytown, NY.
Although painted separately, Mr. and Mrs. Dixon appear to share a couch against a large window through which an elaborate landscape can be seen. Both are dressed in stylish and sophisticated attire. Hiram W. Dixon was the owner of a hardware store in Hudson. In 1856, Mr. Dixon was elected a messenger of the Electoral College to carry the vote to Washington. A newspaper article reported that each year he “predicted the election returns and his selections were as predictable as the Gallup polls.” In 1864, he was a director of The First National Bank of Hudson and in 1866, appointed postmaster of the Hudson post-office.
In 1866, the family became members of the First Reformed Protestant Dutch Church in Hudson. Mr. Dixon was also involved in real estate and insurance in Tarrytown where there is a street named for him.

1800-1900, 19th century, from Rochester collections, mosques, Orientalism, paintings
Painting
An enthusiastic amateur archaeologist, Gérôme painted dozens of Eastern scenes over his long career, including a number of mosque interiors. Although the mosque seen here has not been identified, the artist was known to have travelled in Asia Minor, the Middle East, and North Africa, and it is believed that this elaborate interior is a composite, made up of details from a number of specific sites. The worshippers assume accurate postures for their devotions, from the initial upright recitation of vows to the final prostration before God.
Gérôme was a firm proponent of the Academic style: he taught at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris, and won national honors and the patronage of royalty. Although his pupils had included icons of modernism such as Fernand Leger and Everett Shinn, Gérôme was initially opposed to any challenges to the supremacy of the Academy. In the face of increasing opposition to his conservative viewpoint, he declared that the work of the Impressionists was “insipid and badly executed.”

Title is taken from Memorial Exhibition.
George Herdle was one of the most versatile and influential leaders of Rochester’s arts community around the turn of the twentieth century. In addition to being a fine landscape painter, he was president of the Rochester Art Club for nearly two decades and, in 1913, he became the first director of the Memorial Art Gallery of the University of Rochester.
Herdle’s legacy is visible in the building and collections that surround you, as well as in the tradition of connoisseurship and artistic vitality that he transmitted to his two daughters, Gertrude Herdle Moore and Isabel C. Herdle. Gertrude took over at the Gallery as director after her father’s untimely death, and Isabel worked by her side as curator and associate director for many years. The family was honored by the naming of the Herdle Fountain Court on the second floor of the Gallery.

Lachaise's friend, James Sibley Watson, Jr., was a member of MAG's founding family. This remarkably talented individual is best known for his editorship of the avant-garde publication "The Dial," where he worked with literary figures like e.e. cummings and Marianne Moore, as well as his early ventures into motion pictures, including the making of "The Fall of the House of Usher." Watson was married to Hildegarde Lasell Watson, who starred in the film and whose portrait sculpture by Lachaise is also owned by the Memorial Art Gallery (67.11).

Lachaise's sculptures captured in permanent form elusive and complex ideals of female beauty. Here, the model's contrapposto stance, in which the weight is off center rather than upright and balanced, is lively and engaging. Additionally, areas of bronze color enliven the fragment's surface.

Charlotte Whitney Allen and her husband hired Pittsford native Fletcher Steele to design a garden for their newly built house on Oliver Street [Rochester, NY] in 1915. The lot was small, ninety by two hundred feet, so Steele had to make use of interesting details to provide visual stimulation. The young landscape architect had strong notions of what would make a small backyard into a charming city oasis, which he enumerated in several articles and even a book, "Design in the Little Garden". Sculpture was one such detail Steele felt was crucial to a small garden, providing it met the proper criteria. He also considered space composition a necessary factor in good garden design. Some of the traits good garden sculpture should possess, according to Steele, include substantial mass, interesting silhouette, strong light and shadow, and contrasting material and color to the foliage around it.
Mr. and Mrs. Allen commissioned the French-born sculptor Gaston Lachaise in 1926 to create a figure for the focal point of their garden. They had first seen his work in an exhibition in New York City in 1918, from which they may have purchased a small sculpture, and possibly even earlier in the 1913 Armory Show. A group of letters housed at Kenyon College in Gambier, Ohio chronicles the development of their occasionally stormy relationship. After considerable delay, the sculpture was finally installed above the pool in the Oliver Street garden. Alfred Stieglitz, who championed Lachaise, wrote to the Allens in 1927 that "It [the sculpture] has been seen by at least thirty sculptors and their unanimous opinion has been that it is one of the grand bits of work that has come out of America." (Kenyon College Special Collections, Gambier, Ohio, March 26, 1927)

Sculpture
Strength and refinement are communicated simultaneously in this elegant portrait of Hildegarde Lasell Watson. She and her husband, James Sibley Watson, Jr., were important figures in Rochester’s cultural history, and were central to an avant-garde salon of writers, artists and musicians during the first half of the 20th century.
The sculpture is enlivened by Gaston Lachaise’s characteristic use of contrasting surface colors.

Llewelyn Powys (1884-1939) was a British writer. His family was noted for the breadth of the creative accomplishments of its members - painting, architecture, writing, poetry, among other things.
Powys was married to the writer Alyse Gregory, who for several years in the 1920s was the managing editor of The Dial Magazine, a literary and arts journal owned and published by James Sibley Watson, Jr. (son of the founder of the Memorial Art Gallery) and Schofield Thayer.

1900-2000, 20th century, from Rochester collections, musical instruments (depictions), paintings, women
Painting
Maxfield Parrish, leading illustrator and muralist of the early twentieth century, painted Interlude to hang at the Eastman Theatre in Rochester. Through architect Lawrence Grant White, George Eastman commissioned three murals for the theater, which served as both silent movie palace and philharmonic hall. Interlude was Eastman’s favorite, a “peacherina,” he wrote White.
The radiant quality of Interlude is due to Parrish’s high technical standards and theatrical sense of color—electrical reds, vivid purples, and lush apricots. A shade of cobalt straight from the tube was applied so ingeniously that it became known as “Parrish blue.” He painted glaze upon glaze to create a hard photographic finish that betrayed no brush strokes.
Interlude was moved to the Memorial Art Gallery in 1997 to provide it with more stable temperature and humidity conditions. In its place at the Eastman Theatre is a full-size color reproduction.

“Now then for a small piece of vanity—Powers, the sculptor, is taking me in clay, to be wrought in marble in Italy next summer. If he does not get a perfect head, it will be his first failure.”
New York Congressman and Canandaigua resident Francis Granger was one of many prominent American politicians to sit for a classical-style portrait bust by Hiram Powers. Many Grand Tourists made Powers’ sculpture studio in Florence, Italy, a stop on their travels, to witness the artist at work, view his latest creations, or commission a personal artwork.
[Label text from It Came From the Vault exhibition, 2013]
Why do portrait busts often have blank eyeballs? Here’s one theory: originally, many ancient Greek and Roman sculptures were painted, including the eyes, but over the years the paint has faded so that by the 19th century, the eyes appeared to be blank. While 19th century artists often modeled their portrait busts of important political figures on these Classical forms, they did not know that the eyes had been painted originally, so they left them blank. Only with current technology has it been possible to understand how the older sculptures actually appeared.
The subject of this sculpture, Francis Granger (1792 – 1868), was born a decade after the American Revolution and died right after the Civil War. A congressman from nearby Canandaigua when he posed for this sculpture in 1837, he said: “Now then for a small piece of vanity – Powers, the sculptor, is taking me in clay, to be wrought in marble in Italy next summer. If he does not get a perfect head, it will be his first failure.”

Man Ray was the only American who was intimately tied to the Surrealist group in Paris. During the 1920s, his photographic portraits were highly sought after, by the bohemian crowd as well as the social elite. Thwarting expectations causes a sense of tension that was one of the aims of the Surrealists; here, the inclusion of the mannequin arm is intended to disturb and disorient the viewer. Man Ray used the false arm in another portrait in 1932, that of fashion designer Elsa Schiaparelli.
The subject here is Hildegarde Watson, daughter-in-law of the museum’s founder. She was a philanthropist, singer, painter, writer, photographer, and active preservationist.

The architect and designer, Claude Bragdon, introduced his friend Fritz Trautmann to magic squares, in which arranged numbers equal the same amount in the verticals, horizontals and long diagonals. In lines that follow the numbers of a magic square in their natural order (1, 2, 3…), Trautmann observed orbital patterns replicating natural forms. On March 4, 1912 Bragdon wrote in his diary, “Trautmann [has] discovered the spiral law of space.” From this, Trautmann developed his Principal of the Orbit, a philosophical explanation for creation, evolution, and existence:
“I am borne spinning along in the great whirlpool of evolution. It is because I am a child of nature that I am able to conceive only spinning and spiraling things – whirling worlds, universes of nebulae, stars, planets, satellites; universes of molecules, atoms, electrons, protons; universes of embryos, nuclei, chromosomes, genes. By reflection I rotate; my universe turns because I myself turn…my sphere of activity assumes an orbital motion because I am the spinning center of it.”

Long celebrated as our city’s founder, Nathaniel Rochester (1752–1831) was recently discovered to have bought and sold enslaved people while he lived in Maryland. Not only did Rochester buy and sell enslaved people in the South as a business venture, he continued to own and profit from the labor of enslaved individuals after moving north. In fact, he did so until New York State law made it impossible for him to continue in 1827. This information makes evident how insidious and enmeshed slavery was in the business life of the early nineteenth century, even in the northern states.
Many decades before Kodak gave us the snapshot, a portrait such as this one was a way for a privileged, white person of this period to capture their likeness for posterity. In comparison, the enslaved Black men, women, and children of Rochester’s household did not have their portraits painted. Their names, likenesses, and personal stories went largely unrecorded and most have not survived history—another example of the dehumanization of enslaved individuals during this period of American history.

In the traditional repertoire of canoe paddles, there were several styles of blades and handles that were determined by the type of water travel intended and by whether the paddles were made for men, women, or children. This paddle was made for use in a dance; an actual paddle would be longer. Ceremonial paddles are fairly common, and still in use. Images of birds, symbols of great strength and pride, are often used in the decoration of paddles and on other items relating to a journey.

Argillite, a fine-grained sedimentary rock sometimes called “black slate,” is mined in the Queen Charlotte Islands, the only mineable source in North America. These small and easily transportable sculptures were first made by the Haida in the early 19th century for trade with outsiders. Here the canoe is filled with a raven, a bear and two human paddlers. The animals are totemic figures, relating to matrilineal clans; the human figure with longer hair may be a shaman. These sculptures are still being made today in an array of figure groupings and materials.

The eulachon fish, a type of smelt with a very high oil content, was dried then pressed for its oil. This oil (still used today in cooking and flavoring) was placed in a grease dish on the table, into which diners would dip dried fish and other delicacies. This dish is decorated around the rim with opercula, the highly prized ornamental part of a snail shell.
