Blanket Chest is now considered among Castle's early masterpieces. Not only is it one of the first major works to use stack lamination, it also stakes its claim equally as sculpture and furniture. The central form is carved from two blocks of laminated cherry, hollowed out to serve as a storage container. (The lid opens to reveal an ample cradle-like cavity.) The piece is also compelling as sculpture, with its distinctive pod shape and its plant-inspired handle, appearing to grow out of its half-domed base.
Speaking in 2004 about this piece, Castle explained that the base began as a square, which he modified as the piece evolved. Although bases are easy for visitors to overlook - often requiring a change in position from standing to crouching - they are critical to the support and the overall aesthetics. About the significance of bases, particularly of tables and desk, Castle once explained, "I kind of like the thing underneath the most. I was interested in…getting the base out from under the table and making the whole thing a piece of sculpture."

The Memorial Art Gallery commissioned Lord Dragonfly Chair as a bench for public use. It represents the collaboration of two of Rochester’s luminaries, furniture artist Wendell Castle and poet William Heyen (born 1940). Routed into the back and seat are poems from Heyen’s 1981 book Lord Dragonfly: Five Sequences. Heyen made an initial selection of possible poems, from which Castle chose six. To disguise his handwriting, Castle used his left hand to rout these brief untitled poems into the wood.

Visitors to the Memorial Art Gallery have been using this suggestion box for over thirty years, depositing comments in the oval slot on the top, which are read and acted upon regularly. In addition to having a place to leave messages, Suggestion Box is also a favorite stop on many Gallery tours. At last, a piece visitors are allowed to touch! Visual appreciation of the polished surfaces and the sleek animal-like leg can be reinforced tacitly by running hands over the entire piece.

The MAG’s benches by Wendell Castle are the rare artworks in the museum that visitors are encouraged to touch. Run your hands along the smooth wood and sit down to contemplate other works nearby or just to rest.
This bench was originally part of a dining room suite commissioned by the Baker family of Rochester. The artist used a technique called stack lamination, in which planks of wood are stacked and glued together, then carved and joined to create the final form.

This sofa was formerly owned by Oliver Culver (1778-1867), who was an early Rochester pioneer, first supervisor of the town of Brighton, and original builder of the road that became East Avenue. Family tradition states that the sofa was made by a local cabinetmaker from lumber cleared off property owned by Culver. The furniture style is called Empire because it was influenced by French design; it was popularized in the 1820s by a furniture designer named Duncan Phyfe whose workshop was in New York City.
Two Rochester streets are named for Culver: Culver Road and Oliver Street. The 1815 section of Culver’s home still stands today on East Boulevard, where it was moved from its original location at the corner of East Avenue and Culver Road.
