Drypoint
Marion Stratton Gould Fund, 2003.39
Born in Rochester, Hananiah Harari's early art studies took place at the Memorial Art Gallery.
Harari was active in leftist politics, and helped found an artists’ union in 1936 to help improve the economic situation for artists during the Depression. He worked in both a semi-abstract style and a precise realist style.
Drypoint is an intaglio technique. A design is engraved with a hard steel needle (burin) creating incised lines in a metal plate, usually copper. The rough burr that remains at the sides of the incised lines produces a characteristic velvety black tone. This technique, unlike etching, does not require the use of acids.

Born Richard Falk Goldman here in Rochester, Hananiah Harari studied at MAG’s Creative Worskhop, which he described as “a haven, and my first venture into the world of art.” He assumed his new name in 1935, about the time he became active in leftist politics. The cartoons he contributed to the publication The Masses caused him to be blacklisted in the 1950s during the McCarthy era.
