About this work, the artist said that the location "is not one particular place but rather an amalgamation. It has elements of Keuka Lake, a Canandaigua hillside, a Tuscan row of cypress, a mixture of places where I have been painting and what I find inspirational."

Wendell Castle’s art delights and surprises us, and this example is no exception. As if made for a topsy-turvy world, the stick-figure chair stands on a tromp-l’oeil (French for “fool the eye”) pillow that seems to be soft and filled with feathers. At the same time, we can see the wood’s grain and joints and know that it is a hard surface.
Wendell Castle is an internationally acclaimed artist who is based in nearby Scottsville, New York. In his more than fifty-year career, he has continued to explore the possibilities inherent in the medium of wood, and to expand the conceptual realities that can be expressed with it.

The Memorial Art Gallery commissioned Lord Dragonfly Chair as a bench for public use. It represents the collaboration of two of Rochester’s luminaries, furniture artist Wendell Castle and poet William Heyen (born 1940). Routed into the back and seat are poems from Heyen’s 1981 book Lord Dragonfly: Five Sequences. Heyen made an initial selection of possible poems, from which Castle chose six. To disguise his handwriting, Castle used his left hand to rout these brief untitled poems into the wood.

Willie Cole’s work explores areas of overlap and intersection among African, American and African American cultures. Cole makes his art from the reused detritus (otherwise known as garbage) of contemporary life. In this sculpture of old bicycle parts, the artist reinterprets the tji wara (also spelled chi wara) masks of the Bamana people of Mali (like MAG's accession number 93.14).
With real-time communication, social networking and economic globalization, the internet of the 21st century fosters seamless and near-constant encounters across time and cultures. By Africanizing or ritualizing common western objects, Cole embraces and examines these encounters as he comments upon contemporary society.

Anne Currier, internationally renowned ceramist and professor of ceramics at Alfred University, was one of six artists included in the first Rochester Biennial exhibition in 2004. She speaks eloquently about her work:
"The ceramic sculptures express my curiosity about… the physical and visual exchange of masses and voids in space…how the absence of a shape can assert a presence and define an arcane existence. Projection and recession, hard and soft, light and shadow, substance and impression are dynamics that parallel content and intentions…Color and texture are chosen to enhance the ambiguity between the visual perception of a surface and the reality of touch. There is a compulsion to experience inside and outside, using the simplicity of clay cylinders, cones, planes and edges…Associations with architecture and positions of the human figure found in Buddhist temple friezes are part of an exploration that generates for me an intriguing sense of scale, intimacy and narrative."

The faces of prisoners murdered in the Cambodian Killing Fields of the Khmer Rouge are memorialized in Binh Dahn’s series of portraits printed on living leaves. The artist makes his chlorophyll prints by pressing a leaf and a photographic negative together between glass plates and exposing them to sunlight for several months. The natural process of photosynthesis transfers the photographic image to the leaf. After printing, the leaves are suspended and preserved in resin.
As many as 30,000 prisoners were held captive at the prison between 1975 and 1979. When the Vietnamese army liberated the prison, 6000 photographs remained to bear witness to the individuals who suffered there. The original negatives are housed in the Tuol Sleng Museum of Genocide, located in the former prison. A catalog of the images can be found at Cornell University.
[Gallery label text, 2009]
Bin Danh creates what he calls "chlorophyll prints" by pressing a living leaf and a photographic negative between glass plates and exposing them to sunlight. After a period of several months, through the natural process of photosynthesis, the image becomes visible and permanent. For this particular piece, Danh made negatives from photographs taken of prisoners before they were murdered by the Khmer Rouge during the Vietnam War. After being 'printed,' the leaves were suspended in resin. Life, death, and the ways in which we preserve the past are all important considerations in Danh's work.

Marietta Ganapin's kaleidoscopic, seemingly abstract collages started life as reproductions of art works printed in exhibition brochures and catalogues. She made this particular piece especially for the exhibition Extreme Materials at the Memorial Art Gallery in 2006, cutting tiny details from hundreds of postcards featuring the Egyptian inner coffin of Pa-Debehu-Aset in the Gallery collection, 2000.11.2. Even though today's technology would allow her to generate these intricate patterns fairly quickly on a computer, she prefers the painstaking work that allows her to create hand-crafted objects. The end result resembles a vivid Buddhist mandala.

Artist statement from http://www.toddmcgrain.com/:
The Lost Bird Project recognizes the tragedy of modern extinction by immortalizing North American birds, which have been driven to extinction, including the Passenger Pigeon, the Carolina Parakeet, the Labrador Duck, the Great Auk, and the Heath Hen.
The bronze sculptures I am creating will be subtle, beautiful, and hopeful reminders. The human scale of each sculpture elicits a physical sympathy. The smooth surface, like a stone polished from touch, conjures the effect of memory and time. I model these gestural forms to contain a taut equilibrium, a balanced pressure from outside and from inside—like a breath held in. As a group they are melancholy, yet affirming. They compel us to recognize the finality of our loss, they ask us not to forget them, and they remind us of our duty to prevent further extinction.

Basketry
John McQueen is credited with the contemporary revival of basketry, one of the most ancient crafts. He lives in Saratoga Springs, where he grows and gathers the natural materials that he incorporates into his works.
In the Gallery’s piece, the artist has incorporated text into the body of the work. While three complete phrases can be decoded – A PIECE OF CAKE, MISSING THE BOAT, AND A PRIZE AT A PRICE – a sense of the fragmentary quality of individual words is created as each one is picked out. The negative space of the letters suggests the way in which words are openings for ideas, while the interlocked forms of the willow branches recall calligraphic forms.

Ceramics
Many of Rochester's distinguished and internationally-known ceramists are represented in the Memorial Art Gallery's permanent collection. Recently, the Gallery acquired this signature piece by Rochester Institute of Technology professor Stephen Merritt. Its perfectly balanced form appears to hover in space, complemented by the blue glaze's emergence from the rich blackness. The artist's work expresses an Eastern aesthetic that was absorbed during years of study in Japan and continued interest in the traditions of Asian ceramics.
[Gallery label text]
Born in Rochester, New York, Stephen Merritt studied in Japan and taught at Rochester Institute of Technology. “My work has sought to capture what my teachers – and, I believe, all great potters – have sought: the elemental nature of clay and the classic beauty it can convey,” explains Merritt.

Moore studied Venetian decorative techniques at the fames Venini Glass Factory in Murano, Italy. His Palla Series uses simple geometric shapes, such as the sphere or ball - "palla" means ball in Italian - to balance the base of the form. Moore explains: "I focus on the color, shapes, and proportions of the vessels, and the way light interacts with the work."

In <em>V-8 Universe</em> a soup tureen in the shape of an engine sits on a tire-rim-shaped base. Regan incorporates the domestic, the technological, and the religious in a comical mechanic’s version of the three levels of Dante’s <em>Inferno</em>: heaven, purgatory, and hell. The tureen lid, an air-filter housing, is an angel-filled heaven that turns around a god-like light source emitted by a wing nut. Below, the spark plugs illuminate a medieval cathedral (a mechanic’s idea of purgatory?) peopled by planets, saints, and monks carrying car parts. In hell, an endless traffic jam is fueled by the road rage of skeletons.

Sculpture
Take some time to look at this figure of a woman. Don’t miss the roots that she trails behind her and the faces and objects that are scattered on her skirt. This is a portrait sculpture of Harriet Tubman, the heroic woman who escaped from slavery and yet returned to the South between 1849 and 1860 to lead over seventy slaves to freedom. In later years, she worked alongside Susan B. Anthony to advance women’s right to vote.
Artist Alison Saar was commissioned to create a public sculpture of Tubman for a park at 122nd Street in New York City. MAG’s work is a maquette, or a smaller version. Saar represented Harriet Tubman as a person of great determination and strength, and positioned her as an oncoming train because of her reputation as “the Moses of the Underground Railroad”. Even her petticoat resembles a train’s cowcatcher, pushing aside all obstacles in its path. Roots signify Tubman’s efforts to uproot slavery, and the uprootedness of the slaves who had to leave everything behind. “Swing Low” is a Negro spiritual said to be one of Tubman’s favorites.

On 9/11/01, as artist Rhonda Schaller commuted to her studio near the World Trade Center, planes were flying into the Twin Towers. As she emerged from the subway into the debacle, her first instinct was to head to her studio – but she quickly turned and ran to safety.
In the aftermath of the attack, Schaller said that it was as if “…the sounds and smoke and destruction became a part of my work.” In Memoriam is one of a group of drawings that emerged from this period of turmoil. For their first exhibition, Schaller wrote:
"These works were made post 9/11.
I had no choice but to make these works now that darkness and light have been redefined in the collective unconscious. This psychic blow of catastrophic proportions has caused a major shift in the reality of the community, and as an artist, I must respond. For if the symbols of the universe exist in shape and form within us, what does darkness and light in this new age of terror look like, feel like? And who am I within this collective space? What is the interior landscape that alters my personal ‘center,’ and yours, when the exterior landscape is destroyed?"

Lorna Simpson's art defies easy explanation. Inspired by diverse sources, it contains cinematic allusions, references to popular culture, as well as personal narrative. It is intentionally complex and ambiguous. Simpson's goal is to make the viewer think and reflect - about race, about class, about gender.
Untitled (the failure of Sylvester) seems at first glance to be a random grouping of words and images. A closer look reveals that the photographs depict a woman whose face we never quite see - in four of the images, her face is deliberately obscured. Does this suggest that the African-American woman is not actually seen, and is invisible in American culture?
What is the meaning of the text? Like the images, the texts are allusions to mainstream perceptions of the African-American. The Failure of Sylvester is the title of a painting by the Ashcan artist Robert Henri. Sylvester, a young African-American and the artist's model for the painting, has fallen asleep - has 'failed' as a model.

Originally from Brighton, Sarah Brayer has resided in Kyoto, Japan since 1980. She received the 1982 Patron Print Award for her etching Spring Rice.
Internationally known for her washi paperworks and aquatint prints, she is one of the few westerners to have created work using the traditional poured washi technique. Washi is the Japanese word for the traditional papers made from the long inner fibers of three plants, wa meaning Japanese and shi meaning paper.
Aquatint is an intaglio technique that produces tones similar to watercolor washes. Chine collé is the addition of another layer of paper, glued and printed during the printing-press process. It allows the printmaker to print on a much more delicate surface, such as Japanese washi paper, which pulls finer details off the plate.
