At this point in Egyptian history, thieves were already tempted by the riches gathered in early tombs and temples. This sheet lists stolen valuables in hieratic writing, an abridged form of hieroglyphics used for keeping records.

This ceramic vessel and ornate pair of earrings [28.244] are only two of the over 500 artifacts given to MAG by Rochester businessman C. Herbert Ocumpaugh in 1928, when he donated his entire collection of Greek, Roman, Egyptian, and Middle Eastern antiquities to the University of Rochester. Although he was not an archeologist—he had never traveled to these areas of the world—he developed a lifelong fascination with ancient cultures fueled by many visits to the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Aided by archeologists and museum directors, he spent 25 years amassing objects as diverse as iridescent glass, bronze figures of gods and goddesses, and richly-painted Greek ceramics. Ocumpaugh’s donation formed the core of MAG’s ancient collection; today, over 50 objects from this group are included in the exhibits of the Helen H. Berkeley Gallery of Ancient Art on the second floor.

Mysterious, beautiful, contemplative—this small ceramic head of a young woman offers few clues as to her origins. While her hairstyle and earrings are typical to Greek art, her thick wreath, representing hundreds of tiny flowers threaded onto a rope of grass, indicates she may be Egyptian. Archeologists have discovered similar wreaths made of real flowers in Egyptian tombs, suggesting this head was made in Egypt after Alexander the Great conquered that land in 332 BCE. The flowers were most likely roses, also believe to have been introduced into Egypt by the Greeks in the 300s BCE.

Scarabs are amulets and seals carved in the shape of the Egyptian beetle, (Scarabaeus sacer), which was the hieroglyph for "become" or "come into existence." This large scarab contains the name of Amenhotep III, a king of the 18th Dynasty. It also bears the throne name of Thuthmosis III, an earlier king of the New Kingdom, whose scarabs were used as potent talismans centuries after his death.

This pair of nesting coffins once held the mummy of Pa-debehu-Aset, an Egyptian official from the city of Asyut, midway down the River Nile.
Pa-debehu-Aset’s mummy, now lost, would have been placed in the anthropoid, or human-shaped, coffin. The anthropoid coffin would have nested in and been protected by the rectangular outer coffin, called a shrine coffin because it resembles the sacred shrine of a god. Both of Pa-debehu-Aset’s coffins are decorated with images and symbols of the gods, goddesses, spells and prayers that would guide his soul into the afterlife.
Like all ancient Egyptians, Pa-debehu-Aset believed that the mummy was the eternal dwelling place for the spirits of the deceased. The divine powers of gods and goddesses would protect him during his life and after his death. Because of its human shape, the anthropoid coffin could serve as a substitute body should Pa-debehu-Aset’s mummy be destroyed.
