In 1921, when this print was created, Edward Hopper was a relatively unknown artist who had sold a few paintings but had not begun to receive the acclaim that would be his within a few years. By 1931, when it was exhibited at MAG and acquired with funds donated by a relative of the Watson family, Hopper had become HOPPER; the Museum of Modern Art had purchased one of his paintings the year before. While MAG does not own any of his canvases, we are fortunate to own this print and one other from Hopper’s decade of printmaking, 1915–1924.
The cinematic quality of Hopper’s paintings is evident even in his etchings. A shadowy figure placed at the far end of a line of benches could easily be a character from a Hollywood “film noir.”

Edward Hopper’s prints, like those of Martin Lewis, have a strong relationship to cinematic film noir. The artist gives us the sense that we are unseen watchers observing clandestine activity, and we have a feeling of unease. Strongly contrasting light and dark areas and sharp diagonal lines heighten these precarious and anxious feelings.
Who are these people? Are they city dwellers or newcomers? As Jonathan Franzen wrote in a 1966 essay in the New Yorker, “There’s no better way of rejecting where you came from, no plainer declaration of an intention to reinvent yourself, than moving to New York.” Hopper’s work suggests how the city’s cloak of anonymity makes Franzen’s statement possible.

New York nights are evocative and mysterious in Martin Lewis’s work. His print Corner Shadows plays with ambiguity in its use of flickering light and figures gliding through darkness. In his study The Dark Side of the Screen: Film Noir, film historian Foster Hirsch suggests that Lewis’s work, as well as work by other New York artists including Edward Hopper and John Sloan, contains ‘anticipations and echoes of the noir city.’ Edginess, obscured faces and figures, and looming shadows heighten the anxiety that the work communicates.
Corner Shadows was issued by the Print Club of Cleveland as its presentation print for 1930, and is considered Lewis’s most important print commission.

Painting
Critic and painter Guy Pène du Bois continued the Realist, urban tradition of the Ash Can School painters, but peopled his canvases with more urbane elegant, and at times, mysterious, figures.
Jane is one of his quintessential creations. An enigmatic figure appears to step out of a shadow, perhaps in a restaurant or nightclub, perhaps inside or outside, in America or abroad. She is fashionably thin, well-dressed, and bejeweled, and yet for all her apparent material comfort, she manifests a sense of isolation and anxiety, expressed by her hands, her cast down eyes, and a downward turn of the mouth. Pène du Bois' intriguing contrasts of light and dark areas within the painting contribute to the sense of unease that the figure expresses. The painting's mood certainly reflects the artist's admiration of Edward Hopper.

Andy Warhol frequently appropriated images by other artists for his work. In this case, the image was originally a photograph by Charles Moore in "Life" magazine, May 17, 1963.
[Gallery label text 2013]
This image first appeared in Andy Warhol’s Disasters series, in which the artist selected, cropped, altered, and reproduced mass-circulated news photographs. The series commented upon America’s social ills with photos of suicides, car crashes and nuclear explosions. Birmingham Race Riot captures the racial tensions that gripped the country during the Civil Rights Movement.
Warhol was an eager consumer of newspapers and magazines; he likely saw this photo of the Birmingham riot when it was published in LIFE magazine on May 17, 1963, only five days after the event it immortalized. The original photograph was taken by Charles Moore.
