Gallery label text 2012:
Biggers is known for his narrative murals dedicated to the depiction of the human condition, "showing the spirit of man struggling above the mundane, above the material, above suffering."
His own spirit suffered a blow in 1950, when the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, awarded Biggers first prize for his crayon drawing of The Cradle; because segregationist policies allowed African American visitors into the museum only on Thursdays, the artist could not attend the show’s opening.
This is one of eight lithographs by pre-eminent African American artists included in the Resounding Heart Portfolio “to document the historical and evolutionary journey of the Black experience.”
