Although Cassatt began her artistic training in Pennsylvania, from an early age she frequently traveled and lived in Europe. She settled in Paris in 1874, where she became a close friend of Edgar Degas. She soon became affiliated with the French Impressionists and exhibited with them from 1879 until 1886.
Here, the mandolin player holds her instrument as though she were actually playing it while looking at the music on the stand. She is seated on an upholstered settee in a room with a framed picture and a fan on the wall behind her.

Eliza Pratt Greatorex traveled extensively throughout the United States and Europe. Much of her art reflects her peripatetic life, such as this view of a pond in the village of Cernay la Ville, on the outskirts of Paris.

Homer also illustrated life on the home front for Harper’s Weekly magazine as well as battlefield scenes. This print appeared in the July 20, 1861 issue, only a few months following the beginning of the Civil War. The following commentary was included on the page following the cover image: "We give on the preceding page a picture of FILLING CARTRIDGES at the United States Arsenal at Watertown, Massachusetts. At this establishment some 300 operatives are kept constantly at work making war material. The powder…is inserted in the cartridge by men, as shown in the lower picture. The bullet is inserted by girls, as shown in the picture above. At least seventy girls and women are kept constantly employed at Watertown in this avocation. The amount of cartridges turned out daily at this factory alone is enormous; and it is evident that, in the course of a few weeks, there will be no lack of this material of war, at all events."

Many of Homer’s illustrations for Harper’s Weekly magazine, like this one from May 17, 1862, were based on sketches inspired by his personal experiences. His mother wrote, “Winslow went to the war front of Yorktown and camped out about two months. He suffered much, was without food 3 days at a time, & all in camp either died or were carried away with typhoid fever–plug tobacco and coffee was the Staples….He came home so changed that his best friends did not know him…”.
Journalist Steve Mumford wrote one hundred and fifty years later: “What I found moving about Homer’s work was that it wasn’t directly about the morality of the Civil War, so much as it sought to recreate the experience of the soldiers. His art rarely read as propaganda. It showed the powerful bonding among men on the front lines, as well as the terror. Homer had experienced it and drawn it.” [Gallery label, February 21, 2012]

Winslow Homer brought the Civil War to the home front with his illustrations in Harper’s Weekly magazine, including this one from June 8, 1861, shortly after the fighting had begun. The following commentary about the crossing from Washington, D.C. to Alexandria, Virginia appeared in the June 8, 1861 issue:
The scene at the bridges was grand and impressive beyond description…The night was cool and clear, thousands of men were drawn up in a line and defiling past, but hardly a whisper was heard from among them. They all preserved a solemn silence, as though sensible of the momentousness of the occasion; but the rumbling of artillery, the clatter of cavalry, the muskets and ordnance glittering in the moonlight, the suppressed commands of the officers, imparted, nevertheless, a liveliness to the imposing spectacle.
Among the groups of soldiers making the crossing were regiments from New York State. [Gallery label, February 21, 2012]

Winslow Homer, who became one of America’s major painters, brought the Civil War to the home front with his illustrations in Harper’s Weekly magazine. With this engraving in the July 12, 1862 issue appeared the following commentary about the heroic role the surgeon played in the war:
The “Surgeon at Work” introduces us to the most painful scene on the battle-field. Away in the rear, under the green flag, which is always respected among civilized soldiers, the surgeon and his assistants receive the poor wounded soldiers, and swiftly minister to their needs. Arteries are tied, ligatures and tourniquets applied, flesh wounds hastily dressed, broken limbs set, and sometimes, where haste is essential, amputations performed within sight and sound of the cannon. Of all officers the surgeon is often the one who requires most nerve and most courage. The swaying tide of battle frequently makes him a prisoner, and sometimes brutal soldiers will take a flying shot at him as they pass.

The American artist James Abbott McNeill Whistler, based primarily in London, and Monet were both committed to working from nature and seeking beauty in contemporary environments. They directed their focus increasingly on transient effects of light and weather and revisited their subjects under varying conditions. In particular, both artists shared a fascination with the landmarks and activity along London’s Thames River.
This etchings was a part of Whistler’s A Series of Sixteen Etchings of Scenes on the Thames and Other Subjects (known as “The Thames Set”). When they were published in 1871, the prints were already recognized as a valuable record of an already vanishing London.

This scene is a commentary on American elections as well as on a specific Election Day in 1850. On that day, in Saline County, Missouri, the artist George Caleb Bingham ran for a place in the State Legislature. E. D. Sappington, the candidate lifting his shiny top hat, was the winner. Sappington, with his workers, tried to buy votes with liquor, and because he was related to the judge and one of the clerks, the election’s outcome aroused suspicion. While Bingham did not contest the results, The County Election makes a powerful statement about his thoughts concerning the corrupt proceedings. The artist represents himself as the figure in the stovepipe hat seated on the courthouse steps, attended by a friendly dog and two men in white hats who pause to look over his shoulder.
John Sartain was a highly successful engraver and publisher. He is well-known for his mezzotints of paintings by some of America’s major artists, including Emanuel Leutze and Thomas Sully. His descendants continued to make important contributions to the world of 19th century American art.

One of James McNeill Whistler’s great patrons was British shipping magnate and art collector, Frederick Leyland (1832-1892) whose wife and four children were the subjects of numerous drawings, prints, and painted portraits by the artist. Much of what is known of Whistler’s relationship with this family is through letters from his mother, who not infrequently tried her best to smoothe over disagreements between her dilatory son and the impatient Leyland.
Whistler’s regular visits to Speke Hall (the Leyland family’s estate near Liverpool, England) brought him into frequent contact with the children, who posed for him many times. Look for the phrase “I am Flo” to the right of the figure of Florence, the youngest, who is holding a hoop – perhaps an inside joke, a reference to the fact that there were three Leyland daughters who may have been regularly confused with each other!

This landscape is one of several works that were the result of a trip Thomas and Mary Moran made to Scotland in 1882. It shows the Bridge of Three Waters, near the site where members of the MacDonald clan were massacred by solders from a Campbell regiment in 1692.

Bequest of Isabel C. Herdle, 2005.41
Walter Cassebeer was one of the founding members of the Print Club of Rochester, which recently celebrated its 80th anniversary. He is best known as an architect and designed several churches in and around Rochester, as well as some of the landscapes of Durand- Eastman Park. Much of his artwork featured buildings; his numerous lithographs of Rochester’s skyline show how the city changed and grew throughout his life.
This covered bridge is located in Downingtown, Pennsylvania. Note the inscription to the second Memorial Art Gallery director: “To Miss Gertrude Herdle with much affection and appreciation.”
