"Returning Sails at Takanawa" adapts the classical trope of "Returning Sails at a Distant Bay" (enpo kihan) to the well-known view of Edo bay along a stretch of the Tôkaidô Road at Takanawa in the Shiba district of Edo. Smaller boats with white sails ferry goods to shore from the large dark ocean-going vessels anchored in the bay. In the unceasing traffic along the Tôkaidô Road, the major highway leading in and out of the city to the south, we see a mounted samurai and his servant in the lower-left corner passing through the granite sides of the gated portal to the city. Coming towards them is a group of pilgrims dressed in white, followed by two more samurai borne in palanquins, and another two palanquins are parked at the side of the teahouse. Large hand-carts for carrying building materials are seen in the lower right-hand corner, while at the right workers appear to be building a larger restaurant or teahouse. Two sign-boards next to a mile-post at the seating area carry official regulations pertaining to travelers entering Edo—these signs were a common sight at every bridge and approach to the city, along with the heads of executed criminals.

"Night Rain on the Xiao and Xiang" becomes "Night Rain on Akabane." The white cartouche at the approach to the bridge carries the seal and name of Echizen-ya Heisaburô, publisher of the series, with the round official "approved" (<em>aratame</em>) seal of the government censor. In the upper left corner are Hiroshige's signature and seal and the seal of the publisher Izumi-ya Ichibei.
In the lower left corner is Akabane Bridge across the Meguro River (now little more than a small canal under a superhighway). We are looking south across the river at the outer military barracks of the mansion of the Arima of Kurume, low white buildings set with red gates and roofed with blue tiles. Since 1688 the samurai Arima family was charged with fire prevention at the important Zôjôji temple nearby that is now behind the viewer (see "Evening Bell at Mt. San'en," 87.34.5), and on a hill behind the compound looms their fire-watch tower (<em>hinomi yagura</em>)—these tall watch-towers were among the most familiar sights in the combustible city of Edo.

"Evening Glow on a Fishing Village" has become "Evening Glow on Jinmei Shrine." Jinmei, which literally means "God-bright," was a term used to indicate the chief of all Shintô deities, Amaterasu no Ômikami, who is enshrined here. The Jinmei Shrine, also called the Great Shrine of Shiba (<em>Shiba Dai Jingû</em>), was one of Edo's most popular places for outings, and its popularity made it a favorite place as well for particularly brazen prostitutes who were parodied in poetry:
<blockquote><span class="small"><em>Jinmei wo</em> Even worshipping<br>
<em>Ogandeiru ni mo</em> At the Jinmei shrine—<br>
<em>Mosshimoshi</em> "Well hell-lo there"</span></blockquote>

One in a series on the theme of bridges spanning the Sumida River that bisects Edo, this print shows the <em>Azumabashi</em>, or Azuma Bridge (<em>-bashi</em> means bridge), in the background. The Azuma Bridge was famous as the site where the fireworks displays over the river in summer were customarily viewed. Mt. Fuji appears in the distance behind the title cartouche on the left, and a roof of the popular Sensôji temple juts up just to the right at the far end of the bridge. The two most famous bridges of this appearance during the Edo period were Azumabashi in Edo and Sanjô Ôhashi in Kyoto. While the geisha playing the <em>shamisen</em> in the foreground is not specified, her name may well be Azuma ("East"), then as now a common word in the names of people such as entertainers and sumô wrestlers.

This print illustrates the text of a poem by the Empress Jitô, who ruled Japan from 690 to 697. In translation, the poem reads
<blockquote>The spring has passed
And the summer come again;
For the silk-white robes,
So they say, are spread to dry
On the "Mount of Heaven's Perfume."</blockquote>
The "Mount of Heavenly Perfume" is the name of a hill southeast of the ancient capital of Nara. According to legend, the villagers of the region spread their winter clothing on the slopes of the mountain to dry. This print seems to show people bringing clothes to wash in the river and dry on poles in the background. What is actually shown, though, is the manufacture of linen cloth from flax fiber, a process that produces a very foul odor. In the original Japanese, the Empress has used the words <em>ama</em> and <em>kagu</em>, which mean respectively both "heaven and flax" and "to smell good and to smell bad." The last line of the poem, then, can also read "On the Mount of Flax's Stench," a verbal pun that Hokusai translates into a visual one.

The early-11th century Tale of Genji was a favorite theme of Edo period art. This scene refers to the problematic moment when the young Kashiwagi, the son of Genji's old friend Tô no Chûjô, catches a glimpse of one of Genji's wives, the Third Princess, whose errant cat she has chased out onto the verandah in the springtime. (Later in the story, Genji will be cuckolded by Kashiwagi, whose son the Third Princess bears.)
Although the scene shown here does not suggest that the Princess, who like all noblewomen should remain out of the sight of men, has just been chasing her cat into plain view—the cat is, after all, asleep on its own cushion—any woman depicted in court robes on a verandah with a cat is invariably the Third Princess. The two young men in court robes may therefore be identified as Kashiwagi and his companion, Genji's son Yûgiri.

This print, which shows figures traveling along the banks of the Minobu River and, shrouded in mist, Mt. Fuji rising in the distance, is part of Hokusai's best-known and unified series "Thirty-six Views of Mt. Fuji." Prints from this series explore the sacred mountain from all distances, every possible angle and in all seasons. Here, Hokusai has rendered the Minobu River as stylized waves of rolling water. The unusual large horizontal format is a way of dramatizing groups of travelers as characters on a stage-set of natural scenery.

This famous scene of ancient Japan was long a favorite subject of poetry and painting. The poetic trope, or figurative language, occurs in a poem in the Sankashû by the classical poet-monk Saigyô (1118-1190). In translation, the poem reads
<blockquote>In the spring rains
The low-lying plains
Are filled with water;
Where is the eightfold bridge
Over the moors of Mikawa?</blockquote>
Yatasuhashi, the Japanese word for "eightfold bridge," is most familiar today as the brand name of plank-shaped cinnamon-flavored cookies that are still a popular memento of Kyoto.

"Geese Descending on Gotenyama" plays on the classical "Geese Descending on a Sand Bar." The view here is from from Mt. Goten (Gotenyama), overlooking Edo Bay from above the spit of land that can be seen in the far distance in the right of the first print in this series. Gotenyama means "The Shogun's Mountain," so named because the first Tokugawa Shogun, Ieyasu (1542-1616), built a mansion (<em>goten</em>) for hunting on this elevation. Cherry-trees from Yoshino near Kyoto were planted here 1661-73, making it a favorite sightseeing spot. More than twenty years later Hiroshige was to recycle this scene in his "Hundred Views of Edo: View North from Mt. Asuka" (<em>Meisho Edo hyakkei: Asukayama kita no chôbô</em>), with one crucial change: rather than Edo Bay here, the later view is of the mountains northeast of the city.

"Autumn Moon at Tamachi" echoes "Autumn Moon over Lake Dongting." This print contains the publisher's seal only of Echizen-ya Heisaburô. The script near the roof-beam of the red shrine names the building as the Hachiman Shrine, also known as Samezu Jinja or "Shark's Head Shrine" for the statue of the sacred Buddhist deity Kannon that a founding legend of Edo claims fishermen found in the belly of a shark pulled from the bay near this spot. The light of the harvest moon in this lovely autumn night view makes the city rooftops appear to glow whitely below the shrine to Hachiman, the god of war and one of the important cult deities of the Tokugawa house.

"Evening Bell at Mt. San'en" shows as its "distant temple" the Sangedatsumon (Gate of Freedom from the Three Misperceptions), the main gate (<em>sanmon</em>) of Zôjôji, the burial temple of the Tokugawa shoguns. This gate, originally built in 1622, is one of the few monuments of Edo still extant today; the rest of this magnificent temple disappeared, along with much of Tokyo, in the Allied bombing raids on the city during WWII. This print shows people walking at dusk in the "Field of One Hundred Pines" that stretched in front of the temple's main gate. The characters "mountain ties" used to write the word <em>san'en</em> in the title of the print are properly written with the homophonic characters "three ties," which in the Jôdo sect of Buddhism refers to the three duties of its main devotional rite, one of which is <em>zôjô-en</em> or the duty of reciting the name of Amida Buddha—the source of the name of Zôjôji temple shown here.

"Night Snow over Mt. Atago" replaces "Night Snow over a River Sky," and the script near the treetops tells us that the scene is of the year-end fair on this Shiba height with its unparalleled view over the bay. In his "Hundred Views of Edo" Hiroshige will turn this view into a dramatic closeup of the owner of a famous teashop atop this hill as he stands impressively against the New Years dawn over the bay. One of the temple buildings is shown here with donated paintings called <em>ema</em> arrayed under its eaves, while the masses of people move among the temporary stalls set up under the snow-covered trees to sell every sort of trinket and food. These same stalls can still be found selling pretty much the same things in the famous "inner shops" (<em>nakamise</em>) of the Asakusa Sensôji temple. A few of Edo's ubiquitous fire watch-towers can be seen sketched in down in the flatlands along the bay where the merchant class lived and worked.

"Clearing Storm at Shirogane" features the local shrine to "Lord Kiyomasa" (Katô Kiyomasa), whose martial valor was and is worshipped here, together with the deity Bishamonten, one of the "Seven Lucky Gods" (<em>shichifukujin</em>). The trees are printed using an innovative application of black ink that conveys the impression of thick foliage and dense shadow.

The title of this print indicates that it was originally one of a series of five. It appears to pun on the archaic term <em>hisakataya</em>, or "gleaming", a formulaic word used in ancient poetry to modify celestial phenomena such as stars, snow or, as here, falling cherry-blossom petals; and the Hisakata-ya, which was probably the name of the teahouse or restaurant where this particular poetry club met. Hisakataya is also the pen name of one of the two poets whose work is inscribed on the print.
The woman depicted here, perhaps an entertainer at the teahouse, continues the classical tone of the print by playing not a <em>shamisen</em>, the favored instrument of the entertainment world, but rather a <em>koto</em>, preferred by the ancient aristocracy. There are two poems on the <em>koto</em>. The one on the right, written by the poet Kamenoya Osamaru, reads:
<blockquote>Clouds of cherry-blossoms
On this spring day
Conceal the bamboo thicket
From whence come the sounds
Of a jewelled koto.</blockquote>

Komori Soseki designed kacho-e, or “bird and flower prints,” during the 1920s and early 1930s. Although little is known about his life, Komori Soseki’s work, like that of the artist Yoshida Hiroshi seen at the left, represents the shin-hanga, or “new print,” movement in Japan after the end of the Meiji period in 1912. Shin-hanga artists worked in the traditional manner: they created art, primarily of characteristically Japanese subject matter, which was then produced as a print by a publisher rather than the artist himself.
Even though kacho-e prints were not as favored by Japanese collectors as the earlier ukiyo-e prints of landscapes and actors, they were very popular with Western collectors and became lucrative exports for Japanese publishers.
