Painting
This altarpiece is painted in the style of Nardo di Cione, one of the most influential Florentine painters working in the decades following the plague, or Black Death, of 1348. In the central panel the Madonna holds the Christ Child, who bears a scroll with the beginning of the inscription “I am the light of the world.” On the left, John the Baptist holds a scroll reading “Behold the Lamb of God” and points toward Christ; on the right, St. Peter displays the key to the kingdom of heaven and respectfully covers his hand to hold the Bible. On the far left and right of the polyptych, or multi-part painting, are Sts. Francis and Dominic, founders of the two most important mendicant monastic orders.

Painting
This painting was once part of a cycle of frescoes in the church of Santa Lucia in Fabriano, a town northeast of Rome. The series probably depicted the story of the life of Saint John the Baptist, who, according to Christian tradition, was the precursor of Christ. The subject, taken from the first chapter of the gospel book of Luke, presents the vision of the aged Zacharias as he officiates at the altar of incense and learns from the Angel Gabriel that his wife Elizabeth, although “well stricken in years,” is to bear a son, John, who will “make ready a people” for the coming of the Lord. The crowds, who “waited…and marveled,” are at the right, dressed in the style of Florence during the 1300s. The pointed turban of the middle figure indicates that he is Jewish. The kneeling figure at the left is probably the donor of the painting.
This painting was removed from the wall in the 1800s and has since been remounted on canvas. It has been connected to two others from the same church, The Crucifixion in the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, and The Birth of John the Baptist in the Galleria Nazionale, Rome.

This leaf from the New Testament of a Bible—the fundamental book of the Christian religion—contains the end of the text from St. Paul’s first letter to Timothy and the beginning of the text from the second. Like books today, the script at the top of the page, which reads “Thimo II,” serves as a chapter heading.
As seen in the second column of script, the books are divided by the elaborately decorated, elongated letter “P,” the center of which contains the image of a man sitting on a stool and writing. This figure represents one of Christ’s apostles, St. Paul, whose compiled letters of advice and encouragement to contemporary Christian followers form a large part of the New Testament.

This beautiful representation of the Madonna and Child is typical of a type known as the “Virgin of Tenderness,” which developed in France in the early- and mid-1300s. The elegant quality of the Virgin’s dress and her courtly stance suggest her elevated status and nobility, while the Christ Child’s pose and the manner in which his mother supports him evokes an informal, tender mood.
The Virgin’s crown, which alludes to her role as Queen of Heaven, rests on a veil that symbolizes her humility. Although only a small fragment now survives, the Virgin initially held a flower in her right hand, probably a rose or lily, while the Christ Child holds a bird. In Christian tradition, these symbols refer to the story of Christ’s birth and sacrificial death.

Sculpture
This sculpture was originally part of the tomb of Philip the Bold, who was the ruler of the Netherlands and regent of France until his death in 1404. Forty mourning figures, called pleurants, form a procession around the base of the tomb. Each is placed in an arcade characterized by gothic architectural forms. The gisants, or funerary statues, of the Duke and his wife rest on top of the tomb.
The tomb of Philip the Bold, originally in the Carthusian monastery of Champmol at Dijon, France, was destroyed in the French Revolution. Many of the surviving fragments, including the top of this arcade, were salvaged and then sold to collectors. The tomb was extensively restored from 1818 to 1823 and now stands in the Museum of Fine Arts in Dijon.
