In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, exhibitions played an essential role in disseminating the work of individual artistic groups to a wider public, thus both bypassing and providing an alternative to traditional academic venues. Posters for these exhibitions, usually designed by the artists themselves, not only provide a unique record of the exhibition but represent some of the finest work of the period. This poster advertises an open, or unjuried, exhibition of works by Hamburg artists who had been released from military service ("Open exhibition of the works of the fine artists of Hamburg and the region who have been released from military service, to take place in the Kunsthalle, Hamburg").
