Painting
Every pictorial element in this full-length portrait of a young boy refers to his aristocratic heritage and high status in society. His costume is made of a richly-textured fabric trimmed with buttons of gold; the elegant purse at his waist, his fashionable small plumed hat and the golden hilt of his sword attest to the wealth of his family. The coat of arms on the gilded medallion he holds in his right hand clearly identifies him as a member of the Bracciforte family of Piacenza, one of the richest cities in Renaissance Europe. A book, flute and allegorical statue of Fame, shown here as a winged figure holding two long, thin trumpets, are on a table at his right; they suggest the importance of education and music in the highest strata of Renaissance society.
For decades, this portrait was attributed to the painter Niccolò dell’Abate. Recent scholarship, however, has suggested that it is the work of Girolamo Mazzola Bedoli, who was well known for his portraits of the Farnese and other notable and aristocratic families in the Duchy of Piacenza as well as the nearby Duchy of Parma. These two duchies united only a few years after this portrait was painted.

Painting
According to the New Testament Gospel of Matthew, King Herod, ruler of Judea, or ancient Palestine, ordered the infant Christ killed upon hearing of his birth. Warned by an angel in a dream of the danger, Joseph fled into Egypt with Mary and the baby. In this painting, Mary nurses Christ while Joseph tends their donkey in a lush landscape modeled on those local to the artist rather than the desert the Holy Family actually crossed. This scene was a particular favorite of the artist Joachim Patinir, who specialized in depicting semi-imaginary landscapes with meandering rivers and soft, protruding cliffs and rock arches.

This painting depicts the New Testament story of one of the most popular devotional images in Christian art, the Adoration of the Magi. After Christ was born, three wealthy Magi, or Kings, from the east came to Jerusalem seeking the one “who was born king of the Jews.” When they found him near Bethlehem with Mary and Joseph, seen here standing behind the Virgin and infant Christ, they “bowed down and worshipped him, opened their treasures and presented him with gifts of gold, incense and myrrh.”

Painting
This panel was once part of a large and complex altarpiece dedicated to Saint Andrew, one of Christ’s apostles. It illustrates one important episode in the saint’s life. According to Jacobus de Voragine’s Golden Legend, written around 1288, a devout bishop venerated Saint Andrew above all others saints. He began whatever he was about to do with the prayer, “To the honor of God and Saint Andrew.” This filled the devil with envy, and he turned all his cunning to the task of deceiving the bishop.
In order to accomplish this deceit, the devil took the form of a beautiful woman, who arrived at the bishop’s palace under the guise of seeking refuge from an unwanted marriage. In actuality, her intent was to seduce the bishop into breaking his vow of celibacy. The seduction was interrupted by the arrival of a pilgrim, who was asked three difficult questions. His answer to the last, that the woman could measure the space between heaven and earth because she had fallen the distance, unmasked her as the devil, shown here by her bat-like clawed hands, furred arms, and pointed ears. Later, a dream revealed to the bishop that the identity of the pilgrim was Saint Andrew.

Painting
Paul Vredeman de Vries' "Interior of a Gothic Church" is a remarkable example of early architectural painting, a genre that was an integral response of 16th and 17th century Flemish painters to Italian Renaissance art and architecture. The artist was trained by and worked with his father, Hans Vredeman de Vries, the author of "Scenographiae, sive perspectiva" (1560). This influential treatise served as pattern-book for architectural painters and introduced two of their most common subjects: the palace court with views through arcades and archways, and the extended view down the center of an imaginary church.
In this painting, Paul Vredeman de Vries' use of linear perspective, tonal rather than bright colors, and realistic effects of light and atmosphere give the viewer the sensation of being in the interior of the church rather than seeing it from a distance. His meticulous attention to details such as the painted altarpiece on the left, the open doorways on the right and left, and the baptismal font in the center suggest that he has painted the interior of an actual rather than imaginary church. He does, however, make at least one step into the imaginary: he has embedded his signature in the tombstone at the far left of the painting and the date in the tombstone left of center.

Vicenzo Catena was active a generation after Hans Memling, the Northern Renaissance artist who inspired Kehinde Wiley’s contemporary portrait nearby. Despite a difference of 500 years in the creation of Catena’s and Wiley’s portraits, the similarities are striking. Both are three-quarter profiles of young men of their day, set in a distant landscape. The sitters are linked not by social status but by their stillness and intensity of gaze, and by their immediate relationship to the viewer.
Catena’s patrons were primarily members of the aristocratic and wealthy classes of Venice, Italy, of which the sitter for "Portrait of a Young Man" was certainly a member. The portrait’s aesthetic appeal derives from the simple, crisp composition; high level of craftsmanship; strong characterization of the sitter; and fluid use of brilliant and contrasting oil glazes.
