1800-1900, 19th century, genre scenes, men, paintings, politics in art
Painting
Blythe’s painting shows a scene of frontier justice in a rough building serving as a courtroom. A backwoods “lawyer” at the center either defends or makes his case against a shackled prisoner at the right. However, some elements of the scene, including the onlookers—some armed with long guns, some distracted by a card game—and the pot and sack at the lower left labelled “tar” and “feathers,” reveal that this is an extrajudicial proceeding. The prisoner whittles unconcernedly while his fate is decided, suggesting that this is a typically satirical genre scene for Blythe, who made other paintings of farcical trials and caricatured politics.

1900-2000, 20th century, American art, bridges, by Rochester artists, cityscapes, jobs & work, paintings, views of Rochester & western New York
Painting
One of Rochester's most picturesque river crossings is the Veterans' Memorial Bridge (Ridge Road), completed in 1931. In this painting, Carl Peters records the complex engineering systems that were used to build the bridge's series of seven granite-faced concrete arches. Most likely, his vantage point was the steep west bank of the Genesee River, whose green waters flow far below; work has been completed on both sides of the river but the bridge is still lacking its large central span.
On the bridge is a dedicatory plaque donated by World War I Gold Star Mothers - women who lost sons in World War I. At the dedication, the president of the group said:
Great bridges across flowing waters are
indicative of the continual labors of life.
In the very presence of continual change,
they seem to connect the past with the
present, even as they connect the East
with the West, the North with the South...

Painting
While we may not know who painted this work, we can trace its inspiration. In 1851 Jasper Cropsey's painting American Harvesting was in the American Art-Union's annual exhibition in New York. The American Art-Union, formed in 1844, promoted American artists by purchasing and exhibiting their works. To familiarize more Americans with these artists, engravings were made and distributed to members. Possibly, one of these engravings was owned by the artist who did the Gallery's painting. Several other versions of this work exist and were most likely inspired by the same print. A version of the this image was printed by Currier & Ives, entitled 'A Summer Landscape: Haymaking."
Cropsey's painting is currently in the collection of the <a href="http://www.artmuseum.iu.edu">Indiana University Art Museum</a>.

Academic artists viewed scenes of peasants performing their usual daily chores as a modern-day counterpart to the rustic figures of antiquity so beloved in historical paintings. Despite their circumstances, peasants in Academic paintings were usually depicted as clean, well-fed and neatly dressed. Here a girl carrying laundry resembles a caryatid, a classical figure used to support an architectural pediment.

Painting
This painting of two women weaving by the cool light of a single window won a prize at the St. Louis World’s Fair in 1904. The naturalistic depiction of the crowded interior, with natural tones enlivened by the red blouse of one woman and the blue wool being woven, shows Emma Lampert Cooper’s award-winning grasp of composition and color. However, by the time it was given to MAG, 70 years later, it was mistakenly labelled as a work of her husband, Colin Campbell Cooper.
Emma Lampert Cooper was the first vice president of the Rochester Art Club when it was founded in 1877, and later its president. She taught art at the Mechanics’ Institute (now RIT) from 1893 to 1897.

Painting
Painting is an essentially concrete art and can only consist in the representation of real and existing things.
- Gustave Courbet (1861)
Courbet was the leading painter of a movement called Realism. Many French citizens began to advocate for democratic and socialist reforms after the Revolution of 1848 overturned the monarchy of King Louis-Philippe. Realist painters depicted modern subjects drawn from the everyday lives of the working class.
The subject matter of The Stonebreaker is similar to that of Courbet’s The Stonebreakers, which Courbet exhibited at the Salon in 1850. The earlier painting, destroyed in World War II, depicted two men dressed in heavy, tattered clothing crushing rocks near a road. Because of its raw and, according to some viewers, politically motivated subject matter, The Stonebreakers was extremely controversial with the French public. The Gallery’s The Stonebreaker, painted over 20 years later, reflects a more intimate view of the laborer, solitary as he eats his midday meal.

E.E. Cummings was an accomplished visual artist as well as one of America's greatest poets. Some of his early work was reproduced in The Dial, a magazine that was published from 1920 - 1929. The Dial's offerings included prose, poetry, critical reviews, as well as visual arts. Because of Cummings' friendship with the publisher, James Sibley Watson, Jr., he had an early relationship with the publication, which published his poems, his essays, and his drawings. James Sibley Watson, Jr., also provided Cummings with an apartment at 4 Patchin Place in Greenwich Village.
Watson, who along with his wife Hildegarde Lasell Watson, were supporters of a number of other artists, including sculptor Gaston Lachaise. He was the son of Emily Sibley Watson, who founded the Memorial Art Gallery of the Unversity of Rochester in 1913.

Frasconi, an internationally-recognized woodcut artist, is the illustrator of many books and posters. His bold and colorful signature style emanates from the artist’s enthusiastic response to the world around him:
"There is so much going on, so much material for artists! You go back a hundred times to a place like the Fulton Fish Market, until you know just how a man lifts a box, say, or how the place looks before dawn. Then you’re ready to make a picture – to put your own feeling into it."
Unloading the Fish is part of his Fulton Fish Market series. The market is in lower Manhattan, near the Brooklyn Bridge, whose cables create a lovely interplay with the boat’s rigging in Frasconi’s print.

Painting
Painted in the illusionistic technique of trompe l’oeil (French for “fool the eye),” The Printseller depicts a heavily-bearded shopkeeper cradling a small statuette of Cupid. The display case before him contains a variety of objects, including prints, books, coins in a porcelain dish, a magnifying glass, a wineglass, a strand of pearls and a metal tankard. Many of the prints are reproductions of famous paintings that would have been familiar to Walter Goodman’s audience of the early 1880s.
A string of small photographs called cartes-de-visites stretches across the display case. These small photographic portraits, sized to mount on a visiting card, became extremely popular; a craze developed for collecting the cartes of celebrities as well as family and friends. Here, each represents a famous Victorian painter of Goodman’s time, including John Everett Millais, Rosa Bonheur, and Lawrence Alma-Tadema (fourth, sixth, and ninth from the left, respectively). A larger photographic portrait of the famous art critic John Ruskin is located in the center directly below the string of cartes.
Although relatively unknown, Walter Goodman was an interesting and practiced artist with a varied career as a portraitist, illustrator and writer. Of Jewish heritage, he was the son of portraitist Julia Salaman Goodman. He was widely traveled and an intimate member of London’s theatrical society. He exhibited at the Royal Academy and the British Institution.

Painting
In this picture, a doctor dramatically examines a flask of urine as he takes his patient’s pulse. The setting is the young woman’s bedchamber; she droops with exhaustion as the physician seeks a diagnosis. A second woman, her hand placed jauntily on her hip, leans between them.
The role of the characters in this painting would have been easily understood in the prosperous world of 17th -century Holland. The satirical subject of the quack doctor (suggested here by his dramatic posturing and costume) who claimed he could identify all sorts of illnesses by looking at a patient’s urine was a favorite theme in both theater and painting. There are also moral overtones in the portrayal of the patient and the demeanor of her companion—scenes of fainting women usually referred to lovesickness, erotic melancholy or pregnancy.

The poet John Ashbery and the painter Elaine de Kooning were both members of a group of innovative New York artists that included Jackson Pollock, Mark Rothko, and de Kooning’s husband Willem. Like those of her contemporaries, de Kooning’s aesthetic interests had shifted from traditional representational styles toward the radically new artistic development of Abstract Expressionism. However, the human—and particularly the male—figure still intrigued her; during the 1970s she painted several portraits of friends, including this one of Ashbery.

Although he was of the same generation as Monet and Renoir, Lhermitte chose to follow the path of traditional realism, rather than the Impressionists' experimentation with color. He did practice the fluid brushwork that they had popularized, however. Like Sorolla... Lhermitte specialized in scenes of rural workers. However, his keen eye caught the contrasting colors and textures of sun-bathed landscape and figures in much greater detail. Sorolla concentrated more on the colors and effect of the light rather than on the details of form.

On one of their many long, evening walks, Millet said to his brother Pierre: “It is astonishing toward the approach of night, how grand everything on the plain appears, especially when we see figures thrown out against the sky. Then they look like giants.”
The End of the Workday showcases Millet’s fascination with the hour of twilight, which moved him by its power to transform human and other natural forms into strange shapes, evocative of dreams. The pastel, which shows a peasant silhouetted against the fading sky, putting on his jacket after a day of labor, is classic Millet. Best known as a painter of peasants, a politically and socially complex subject matter in France of the 1800s, his scenes of rural life focused on the human figure as much if not more than the landscape.

Pancake vendors, much like outdoor food vendors today, were a common sight on Dutch streets during the 1600s. Originally a delicacy prepared on the festival day of Shrove Tuesday, the last day of Carnival and the day before the beginning of Lent, pancakes were associated with feasting and wild behavior. Images of pancake makers were initially moralistic in nature, symbolizing gluttony and lust. By the 17th century, pancakes were eaten every day and the theme lost some of its allegorical significance. The scene retained its popularity among painters and printmakers of “low-life” genre scenes, or scenes of everyday peasant and street life.
[Gallery label text]
Steen was a prolific artist who specialized in low-life genre scenes, such as the popular subject of the pancake maker. A delicacy prepared especially on Vastenavond, or Shrove Tuesday, which was the last day of Carnival, the pancake had become associated with feasting and riotous behavior. It was therefore identified with overindulgence and became a symbol of gluttony or lust. During the seventeenth century, however, pancakes began to be enjoyed at any time, which reduced the allegorical potency of the theme.

From the triptych "Snow, Moon, and Flowers" (Setsugekka no uchi). There were four artists who used the name Kuniteru in the late 19th century; this work might be by Kuniteru II or III.

Painting
This likeness captures the intense fervor of the artist's friend and patron, Aurélien-Marie Lugné-Poë (1869-1940), an actor and daring theatrical producer who helped Vuillard obtain his first commission for a theatrical poster. The artist's use of broad areas of flat color to define form and volume in this intimate portrait is typical of the Nabis painters, a group of artists influenced by Paul Gauguin and with whom Vuillard was aligned.
