Furniture
This sofa was formerly owned by Oliver Culver (1778-1867), who was an early Rochester pioneer, first supervisor of the town of Brighton, and original builder of the road that became East Avenue. Family tradition states that the sofa was made by a local cabinetmaker from lumber cleared off property owned by Culver. The furniture style is called Empire because it was influenced by French design; it was popularized in the 1820s by a furniture designer named Duncan Phyfe whose workshop was in New York City.
Two Rochester streets are named for Culver: Culver Road and Oliver Street. The 1815 section of Culver’s home still stands today on East Boulevard, where it was moved from its original location at the corner of East Avenue and Culver Road.

Some figural art created by Ancient American cultures may not depict actual humans, but may use the human form as a symbol. The lives of the people of ancient Mesoamerica depended upon their ability to grow and produce food. The cultivation of maize (corn) was central to their world view. The human figure could capture aspects of a belief system that intertwined the cycles of life with the cycles of agriculture. For example, a hunchback (“fatback”) might symbolize abundance, and a dwarf might represent the stunted ears of corn a typical maize plant produces with the healthy ear. Mother and child figures might symbolize lineage or the way corn starts as a kernel, grows into a stalk of corn, and is harvested for consumption.

Terra cotta figurines for religious functions were mass-produced along the Syrian-Phoenician coast. Perhaps this is a representation of one of the Canaanite goddesses, such as Asherah, Astarte, or Anat.

The female figure was the most common subject of the clay figures of the Predynastic age. Simple and smooth, the primitive totemic figures were often reduced to lumps of clay with only the female features in detail. Many of these statuettes must have represented the fertility or mother-goddess. Others may have represented loved ones, servants, or dancing women who accompany the deceased to the next life.

Ceramics
The arts of the Moche, who flourished on the northern desert coast of Peru, evolved from earlier styles in the region. Known to have been weavers, metalworkers, mural painters and builders of large-scale monuments, only their ceramics remain as a testament to their achievements. Stirrup spout vessels – so named because the shape of the spout recalls the stirrup on a horseman's saddle - were designed for the storage and libation of liquids. The unique handle design inhibited both evaporation and spillage as it allowed the vessel to be carried on a belt or sash. This vessel depicts two animated warriors in full regalia; each wears a half-moon nose ornament as a sign of rank and power.

The Moche were keen observers of humanity as evidenced by the wide variety of subjects treated in their ceramics. Although they often based their designs on realistic images and scenes from daily life, these vessels probably had religious and symbolic significance. Here, a portrait of a blind man may allude to both a specific individual and the shamanic practice of using senses beyond sight to determine meaning. This figure is seated and wears a sash that passes through the stirrup spout of another vessel.

Ceramics
The Nasca inhabited the southern coastal valleys of Peru. They produced distinctive ceramics decorated with images of shamans, ritually severed heads, supernatural beings and a variety of animal and plant forms. Frequently using hallucinogenic drugs to induce visions, shamans were often depicted in a transitive state of being, possessing both human and animal characteristics. This vessel portrays a wide-eyed shaman in the midst of an ecstatic flight. The shaman is shown with the upswept whiskers of an otter and the body of a pampas cat, both of which live near water and were considered to be agricultural guardians.

Amulets are small objects that represent gods, goddesses, and symbols of rebirth. Made of bronze, clay, or stone, they offered the wearer sacred protection both in the world of the living and in the afterlife. Ancient Egyptians wore amulets as jewelry
during life; priests would also place amulets within the wrappings of a mummy as they prepared it for burial. Certain amulets were placed in specific locations on the mummy, such as over the heart, the throat, or the incision on the abdomen.
The papyrus scepter, which represents the papyrus plant and fresh vegetation, symbolizes rebirth.

Characteristic features of Zuni pottery are: areas of parallel lines (hatching), stylized birds, and a large rosette. The line break, which is the space left by the incomplete circular painted border that separates the upper and lower sections of the jar, is called by the Zuni onane, or “road.” It is thought to represent the life of the pottery painter herself, and must be left unfinished. It may also refer to the sipapu, or mythic place of emergence from the underworld. Traditionally it is the first painted line applied to the vessel.

Around the lip of this Maya cylindrical vase is hieroglyphic writing in what has come to be called the “primary standard sequence.” Such standardized sequences of glyphs are commonly found around the top of Maya vases from this period. These sequences have been interpreted as descriptions of the function or contents of the vessels and might even include the name of the owner or the scribe. The sequence on this pot has not yet been translated.
The depiction of the seated individual includes a plumed headdress, ear ornaments, necklace and loincloth.

This form traces its lineage from actual working hand-axes whose blades, or celts, were used for farming and felling trees for land use. In this incarnation, the celt has become strictly ceremonial, yet it maintains its ties to the power and prestige that accompanies land ownership. The half-celt form is one subdivision of a whole celt, carefully split length-wise to produce two pieces, each with a flat back and curved and carveable front. Depicting a crouching figure, this image may represent the human-animal combination of a shaman.

This ceramic vessel and ornate pair of earrings [28.244] are only two of the over 500 artifacts given to MAG by Rochester businessman C. Herbert Ocumpaugh in 1928, when he donated his entire collection of Greek, Roman, Egyptian, and Middle Eastern antiquities to the University of Rochester. Although he was not an archeologist—he had never traveled to these areas of the world—he developed a lifelong fascination with ancient cultures fueled by many visits to the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Aided by archeologists and museum directors, he spent 25 years amassing objects as diverse as iridescent glass, bronze figures of gods and goddesses, and richly-painted Greek ceramics. Ocumpaugh’s donation formed the core of MAG’s ancient collection; today, over 50 objects from this group are included in the exhibits of the Helen H. Berkeley Gallery of Ancient Art on the second floor.

Amulets of nude dwarfs probably represent Ptah, the god of craftsmen, and were worn by many workers for protection.

The figure of the ba-bird has a human head on a bird’s body and symbolizes the ba, one of the human spirits that could return to the body after death. Ba-bird amulets were usually placed on the mummy’s chest and, if necessary, could act as a substitute for the ba of the deceased.

Scarabs are amulets and seals carved in the shape of the Egyptian beetle, (Scarabaeus sacer), which was the hieroglyph for "become" or "come into existence." This large scarab contains the name of Amenhotep III, a king of the 18th Dynasty. It also bears the throne name of Thuthmosis III, an earlier king of the New Kingdom, whose scarabs were used as potent talismans centuries after his death.

Veracruz, the Gulf Coast region of Mexico, is rich in archaeological sites with great quantities of ceramic and stone sculptures. This head is a fragment of a larger figure, now missing. The influence from the Maya civilization to the south is visible in the face’s crossed eyes. The Maya believed that since humans had to squint their eyes to look at the sun, the Sun God squinted back. Thus, crossed eyes became a standard of beauty, and parents would hang beads between their children’s eyes so they became permanently crossed.

This unusual figure simultaneously incorporates the physical qualities of both a grown man and a very young child. Depicting a warrior or a hunter, his right arm is drawn back and appears ready to release a weapon.
The figure was mold-made and probably produced for ritual purposes or burial. It would have been embellished with jewelry in the holes in his ears and nose. Quite often figures such as these would have been adorned with clothing and headdresses befitting the rank of a particular individual.

Woodwork
This elaborately carved box was bequeathed to the Memorial Art Gallery by Isabel Herdle, long-time MAG curator and daughter of the gallery’s first director George Herdle. The only record accompanying it was Ms. Herdle’s recollection that it was purchased in an antique shop in Buffalo, New York.
Since its arrival at the gallery in 2005, over twenty curators, conservators and historians have viewed photos of the box. Although they all agree that this is an extraordinary object, no consensus has been achieved on its origin; suggestions have ranged from American to Norwegian to German to Ethiopian. As of this date, the most compelling theory is that the artist was a Palatine German living in the New York frontier during the late 18th century. The imagery is clearly narrative and may depict the devastating battles and attacks involving the Palatine Germans and the Iroquois Confederacy during the American Revolution in the Mohawk Valley. Research that will support or disprove this hypothesis is underway. In 2010 the wood will be scientifically analyzed to determine origin and age.
