For hundreds of years the Dogon have lived along a very steep cliff called the Bandiagara Escarpment in buildings made of clay with thatch roofs. Doors like this, still in use by the Dogon, secure access to the variety of food stuffs stored in their granary buildings. The repetitive shapes on this door are stylized representations of male and female ancestors, and the cone-shaped elements on the left refer to fertility and the female breast. This imagery encourages abundance in life and crops and reflects values held by agricultural communities.

During the annual hoeing contests of the Senufo, the farmer with the most agricultural prowess wins the champion-cultivator staff for one year. The voluptuous and regal figure, the epitome of Senufo beauty, is posted in the ground during competition to watch over and spur on the contestants. These contests are more than simple agricultural competitions; they weave a rich tapestry of art forms—drumming, singing, dancing, and sculpture—to turn back-breaking labor into an inspiring community ritual. The shiny area visible near the figure’s eye is likely residue from the ritual application of oil, a sacrificial offering made to the powers embodied in the staff.

This elaborately carved box was bequeathed to the Memorial Art Gallery by Isabel Herdle, long-time MAG curator and daughter of the gallery’s first director George Herdle. The only record accompanying it was Ms. Herdle’s recollection that it was purchased in an antique shop in Buffalo, New York.
Since its arrival at the gallery in 2005, over twenty curators, conservators and historians have viewed photos of the box. Although they all agree that this is an extraordinary object, no consensus has been achieved on its origin; suggestions have ranged from American to Norwegian to German to Ethiopian. As of this date, the most compelling theory is that the artist was a Palatine German living in the New York frontier during the late 18th century. The imagery is clearly narrative and may depict the devastating battles and attacks involving the Palatine Germans and the Iroquois Confederacy during the American Revolution in the Mohawk Valley. Research that will support or disprove this hypothesis is underway. In 2010 the wood will be scientifically analyzed to determine origin and age.

This carved wooden chest, called a Minnekästchen in German, held small treasured objects like jewels and toiletry articles. The decoration of these chests varies widely and includes chivalric, romantic, and allegorical scenes.
This marriage chest is richly illustrated with heraldic symbols and exotic and fantastical animals derived from medieval Christian bestiaries, collections of stories that describe and interpret the moral significance of real and imaginary animals. The lid shows two winged griffins who together crown a letter (an O, U or V) that probably refers to the uniting of a couple through marriage. A small unicorn, the symbol of chastity and courtly love, rests at the griffins’ feet; two rabbits emerge from their burrows. Two crowned lions frame the lock on the front of the chest, and two chained unicorns adorn the back. A pair of camels—symbols of both prudence and lust—are on one side; on the other, monkeys or baboons are eating fruit.
