This design is based on a double icon painted in 9th-century China for a Japanese monk of an esoteric sect, Kobo Daishi. This mandala depicts the kongo kai or "diamond world."
along edge, Inscription indicates that the piece was made for Shoju, the 23rd Abbot (Hoin) of a temple.
