Note from Bernard Barryte in curatorial file indicates he believes the work may have originally come in in 1956, but it is unclear why he thought that. No record of its acquisition in 1956 could be found. An undated typed list of objects [found in Registrar''s office files] recommended for disposal includes a listing for “E. Sanchez Perrier River Scene—oil on wood” which is listed as having come from the Council—“left from Flea Market, April in Paris.” That may be this work; the April in Paris event was indeed in 1956. A Sanchez-Perrier landscape was included in a Rochester Art Club exhibition in 1895 (Sixteenth Annual Exhibition and Art Loan Exhibition, no. 48), lent by Mrs. Granger Hollister-- was that the same work, and is that then the source of this painting? St. Hyacinth kneels in awed wonder before a mystical vision of the Virgin and Child. The scene takes place in a church interior with pillars and a patterned floor; a shadowy, monochrome figure or statue of a bishop, identifiable by his hooked staff, stands behind the enraptured saint. According to Christian legend, Hyacinth, a Polish Dominican priest who lived from 1185-1287, witnessed a miraculous apparition of the Virgin Mary on the feast day of her Assumption—the day she was “taken up body and soul into heavenly glory.” In 1594, shortly before El Greco painted this work, Hyacinth was granted sainthood by Pope Clement VIII. El Greco (“The Greek”) is the popular name of Domenikos Theotokopoulos, an artist born in Crete but who lived and studied in Venice and Rome. In 1575, he moved to Toledo, Spain, the center of the Catholic Church’s Counter-Reformation activities. During his career, El Greco developed a unique and dramatically spiritual style of painting that is often considered the forerunner of Baroque art. His right hand is raised in blessing. This bishop also has a richly-jeweled mitre, a tall peaked cap that is worn only by bishops, cardinals and the pope. His cope, or outer cloak, is carved to indicate elaborate embroidery. Standing figures of this size often occupied niches at the sides of elaborate tombs or stood on top of columns, on consoles, and in doorways. It illustrates one important episode in the saint’s life. According to Jacobus de Voragine’s Golden Legend, written around 1288, a devout bishop venerated Saint Andrew above all others saints. He began whatever he was about to do with the prayer, “To the honor of God and Saint Andrew.” This filled the devil with envy, and he turned all his cunning to the task of deceiving the bishop. In order to accomplish this deceit, the devil took the form of a beautiful woman, who arrived at the bishop’s palace under the guise of seeking refuge from an unwanted marriage. In actuality, her intent was to seduce the bishop into breaking his vow of celibacy. The seduction was interrupted by the arrival of a pilgrim, who was asked three difficult questions. His answer to the last, that the woman could measure the space between heaven and earth because she had fallen the distance, unmasked her as the devil, shown here by her bat-like clawed hands, furred arms, and pointed ears. Later, a dream revealed to the bishop that the identity of the pilgrim was Saint Andrew.
