After three grueling years in the Alaskan wilderness, Lockwood returned to the United States and eventually married Henry Strong, the first president of Eastman Kodak Co. This and several other baskets the new Mrs. Strong had acquired during her youthful sojourn were later donated to MAG. The log book gives the dimensions for 26.36 as 6 ½”W x 3 ½” H The catalog card gives the dimensions for 26.36 as 7 ?”W x 2” H The object now identified as 26.36 more closely matches the log book dimensions (6 1/2" x 3 3/8"). The object now identified as T764 more closely matches the catalog card dimensions (7 3/4" x 2"). MAG IN-HOUSE RESEARCH CONDUCTED: The objects catalogued in the log book and then in the catalog card could possibly have been these two different objects, hence the different dimensions listed. This is highly unusual, but not impossible. I searched all baskets records to see if any others had dimensions similar to either of these, and did find 22.14 which is described as a Lilloot basket, cherry bark in two shades, basket for trinkets and had dimensions of 2 ?” W x 5 ?” L. This would have made for a tall, narrow basket, somewhat unlikely for trinkets – OR they switched the dimension fields and listed the height as the width and vice versa. If the correct dimensions for 22.14 were 5 ?” W x 2 ?” H, then they would be somewhat close to the dimensions for the second basket pictured above which has dimensions of 5 ½” W (of bottom) x 2” H, although it might be a bit of a stretch since measuring the bottom of a basket for width seems unusual, but I don’t know. However, 22.14 has no location in embark which may very well be because it has been mislabeled all these years. CONCLUSION: During a 7/9/08 meeting between Margie Searl, Chief Curator, Monica Simpson, Registrar, and Jessica Marten, Assistant Curator, it was decided that for the time being the basket in the top image will be identified as 26.36 and the basket in the bottom image will be identified as T764 (mainly for tracking purposes). At the conclusion of the small object inventory, we can reassess. If we find 22.14 then we will know T764 is NOT 22.14. However, if we do not find 22.14 during the course of the inventory, we will determine at that time if perhaps the basket in the bottom image may be 22.14.
