Ellsworth’s great-great-grandfather was a nineteenth-century Mormon prophet. In honor of his twelve pioneer wives, Ellsworth made the first twelve prickly hats in her Seer Bonnet series. The round patterns in the surface design refer to the holes in the “seer stones” used by early male church leaders to receive revelations from God. For Ellsworth, “The circles are my idea of giving the women wearing the bonnets their own visions.” Ellsworth’s choice of corsage pins creates a threatening interior barely concealed by a beautiful exterior. The result is a wonderful and layered paradox. Here is a potent object that would empower and dominate the wearer just as it attracts and repels the viewer. He uses objects he finds at thrift stores, flea markets, garage sales, and the like to create elaborate and decorative works of art that are sometimes beautiful and sometimes troubling. End Upheld has both of these qualities. The sculpture includes a racist image of a male figure of African descent. The object may have once served as a pedestal or a stool. Now it is elevated, sitting atop a stool of its own. Raised to new heights, the figure supports a striking and complex latticework of birds, beads, flowers, stylized lamps, and other ornaments. The title of the sculpture, End Upheld, is a play on words. Just as the figure may have once been a stool for someone to sit on, in this new context it is supporting a world of beauty and light. Through the process of making art, Cave has transformed an object representing a painful, oppressive past into a source of hope and transcendence. Richard Cleaver When contemporary ceramic sculptor Richard Cleaver created Nurse Baltimore, 1850, his studio was located on the original site of Oakland Plantation, a 19th-century farm near Baltimore, Maryland. Nurse Baltimore, 1850 represents Cleaver’s imagined lives and histories of the slave families who lived there, particularly the women who were forced to care for their owners’ children before their own. In Nurse Baltimore, 1850, Cleaver draws on images of the enthroned Madonna and Child from medieval and Renaissance art, such as those seen in this gallery, to depict both the central figure and the white child that she holds. As he explains, “I tried to show the pain of that by putting a hinge on the white child’s face, so when you open it you see a picture of the slave mother’s own child inside.” Gallery label, 2015 ", "Dedication" : "Gift of Gerald and Ellen Sigal", "Copyright_Type" : "See Notes & Histories-Copyright Notes", "Disp_Obj_Type" : "Sculpture", "Creation_Place2" : "American", "Department" : "", "Obj_Name" : "", "Period" : "", "Style" : "", "Edition" : "", "Curator" : "", "Images": [ { "ImagePath" : "https://webkiosk.gallerysystems.com/Media/images/2015.6_A1.jpg", "ThumbnailPath" : "https://webkiosk.gallerysystems.com/Media/Thumbnails/2015.6_A1.jpg", "PreviewPath" : "https://webkiosk.gallerysystems.com/Media/Previews/2015.6_A1.jpg", "IIIF_URL": "http://iiif.gallerysystems.com/2015.6_A1.jpg", "IsPrimary" : "1", "_SurrogateID" : "43858", "Image_Type" : "digital image", "Photo_Credit" : "", "Remarks" : "On disk MAG 150528. Born in a small city near Tehran, she studied art in both Iran and the United States. She lived in New York City from 1946 to 1957, where she moved in the same artistic circles as Jackson Pollock, Frank Stella, and Louise Nevelson. Farmanfarmaian created her first mirror mosaic reliefs in the 1960s after visiting the Shah Cheragh shrine in Shiraz. Her experience of the interior, its walls covered by a mosaic of mirrors cut into geometric forms, transformed her art. I imagined myself inside a many-faceted diamond and looking out at the sun….It was a universe unto itself…all movement and fluid light, all solids fractured and dissolved into brilliance....I was overwhelmed. This fluidity of form manifests vividly in her Convertible Series. The example here is made up of four elements that can be arranged in five different configurations specified by the artist.
