Does the yellowish color appear to be the same in all four squares, or is it different in each one? If you look closely, you might notice that all four squares feature the same yellow-orange color. However, what might make them appear different are the surrounding blue and green outlines, which are distinct in each square. Inspired by the teaching of Josef Albers, Spectral Squares is a lesson in color interaction, and how the perception of a single color can be affected by others adjacent to it. [Label copy from Seeing in Color and Black and White, 2018] Richard Anuszkiewicz is interested in what he calls “color systems” that he uses to create an environment; color is always the main concern in his work. Anuszkiewicz received his graduate degree from Yale in 1954, where he studied color interaction with Josef Albers. During this period, he also read and was influenced by Rudolph Arnheim's writings about art and psychology in Art and Visual Perception: A Psychology of the Creative Eye. Upon leaving school, he began to paint with complimentary colors of full intensity and observed their dynamic effect. He continued to explore the effects of combinations of colors, using simplified forms, mainly the square. He begins his paintings by choosing the colors very carefully under controlled lighting, calling the colors his “cast of characters” and then begins the painting. When you look at this print by Victor Vasarely, do you see a layer of smaller green circles over a layer of larger blue circles, and on top of a green background? Or a blue gear-like shape on a green background with a semicircular border? If you see the former, you are inferring that there is a separate layer of green circles even though they are not clearly distinguished from the same green background. Why might you do this? The human visual system tends to prefer simple shapes over complex ones and regular patterns over irregularities, sometimes interpreting these preferences when evidence for them is inconclusive. In this case, your visual system completes the pattern set up by the smaller green circles that appear to sit on top of the larger blue circles. Your brain fills in the picture, creating a pattern where one might exist. Which of these shapes seems to be closer to you? What architectural structures unfold before your eyes? Inspired by his travels to Latin American ruins in the 1930s and 1940s, Josef Albers’ print combines his streamlined Modern style of composition with inspirations from the ancient world. This particular print is an homage to the celebrated geometric pyramids of Monte Albán, which date back to around 300 BCE and are located in modern day Oaxaca, Mexico. Albers implies depth by surrounding the two central rectangles with a series of concentric lines, the arrangement mimicking the sloping sides of these grand architectural forms. In this image, Albers also creates an optical illusion that challenges our perception of spatial depth. Which of these rectangles appears to be the top of the pyramid? Does that change depending on where you look?
