Wenrich painted in France after he served in the First World War. This group includes both sketches and more fully developed images, like this one of Le Gros Horloge, or The Great Clock, in Rouen, France. Wenrich’s paintings show his fascination with the culture, history, and architecture of France. The pedestrian street below this clock links the site where Joan of Arc was burned at the stake in 1431 with the cathedral Claude Monet painted repeatedly, in different seasons and weather, during the 1890s.
