Artist Edgar Degas admired Cassatt’s art and encouraged her to join the circle of painters that included Pierre Renoir and Claude Monet, the group that became known as the Impressionists. She first exhibited with them in 1879, when she was 35, and continued to be associated with them for the rest of her life. Cassatt was the only American woman in the group. While Cassatt’s subjects were typically women and children, she herself lived an atypical life for a woman in that period. Cassatt was a strong supporter of women’s suffrage; this painting and others were exhibited in a 1915 exhibition at Knoedler’s that was organized by Cassatt’s good friend and staunch supporter, suffragist and art connoisseur Louisine Havemeyer. Inspired by diverse sources, it contains cinematic allusions, references to popular culture, as well as personal narrative. It is intentionally complex and ambiguous. Simpson's goal is to make the viewer think and reflect - about race, about class, about gender. Untitled (the failure of Sylvester) seems at first glance to be a random grouping of words and images. A closer look reveals that the photographs depict a woman whose face we never quite see - in four of the images, her face is deliberately obscured. Does this suggest that the African-American woman is not actually seen, and is invisible in American culture? What is the meaning of the text? Like the images, the texts are allusions to mainstream perceptions of the African-American. The Failure of Sylvester is the title of a painting by the Ashcan artist Robert Henri. Sylvester, a young African-American and the artist's model for the painting, has fallen asleep - has 'failed' as a model. Kollwitz' art was seen as degenerate by the Nazi regime. She was forced to resign her teaching position and was prohibited from exhibiting and publishing her work. In addition to the oppression of the Nazi regime, Kollwitz was struggling with the difficulty of aging. On New Year's Day, 1932, Kollwitz wrote in her diary, "Age remains age, that is, it pains, torments and subdues. When others see my scant achievements, they speak of a happy old age. I doubt that there is such a thing as happy old age...At the very point when death becomes visible behind everything, it disrupts the imaginative process." With cloth and thread, Dill recreated Kahlo’s bitter self-portrait in which Kahlo depicted herself after cutting off her hair in anger to punish her unfaithful husband, Diego Rivera. On layers of tea-stained linen, Dill applied lines from a 19th century poem by Emily Dickinson, whose words hit the artist “emotionally, like a thunderbolt” upon first reading the book of poetry she received on her birthday from her mother: You cannot put a Fire out -- A Thing that can ignite Can go, itself, without a Fan -- Upon the slowest Night -- You cannot fold a Flood -- And put it in a Drawer -- Because the Winds would find it out -- And tell your Cedar Floor – While Kahlo and Dickinson were women who were clearly passionate about their art, Homage is layered with ambiguities. The flowing threads suggest hair as well as fire and water; the delicate feminine stitchery delineates a woman known to have been bisexual, whose self-portrait is decidedly masculine.
