In reality, the church, a symbol of old New York (it was founded in 1696), is dwarfed by neighboring skyscrapers, but from Avery’s vantage point, the cross-topped steeple competes with the surrounding buildings for the highest point in the scene. Perhaps Avery was inserting his own point of view about the competing roles of God and Mammon in that Wall Street neighborhood. As an illustrator for magazines that were bastions of middle-class, conservative values – Saturday Evening Post and Reader’s Digest — Avery may have been expressing the publisher’s values as well. In addition to his children’s books, Bemelmans illustrated for the New Yorker, Vogue, and Holiday magazines. Currently, the curator is trying to determine if this artwork was designed for a New Yorker cover. Upscale New York restaurant were familiar territories for Bemelmans. At age 14, he was apprenticed to his uncle, a hotelier in the Tyrol. The young Bemelmans’ lack of success – and outright bad behavior – contributed to his emigration to America, where he sought his fortune as a waiter at the Ritz-Carlton hotel in New York City. After serving in World War I, he opened and decorated his own restaurant. When a friend in the publishing business suggested that he turn his whimsical paintings into stories, Bemelmans wrote his first children’s book – Hansi. In 1939, Madeline appeared. He went on to write for adults, and in 1941, wrote Hotel Splendide, a fictional account of a grand hotel with an elegant, but problem-ridden restaurant. Bemelmans is buried at Arlington National Cemetery. His public work survives in the 1947 mural commission for the Hotel Carlyle on Madison Avenue – in what is now called Bemelmans Bar. The series was exhibited in 1941-42 in Hartford, New York City, and finally in Rochester at the Memorial Art Gallery, where Bragdon’s patrons, Dr. and Mrs. James Sibley Watson, agreed to purchase this one for MAG. Bragdon wrote about the gift to Isabel Herdle, MAG curator, in 1944: “It is the one which your sister [Gertrude Herdle Moore, MAG director] and Fritz [Trautmann] decided would be best and which was also settled upon by Mrs. Watson and myself.” The Mathematical Abstraction series was best described by the artist in the 1941-42 exhibition brochure: "These fifteen water-color paintings represent the final distillation of Mr. Bragdon’s creative ability in a field which he has made his own. Although susceptible of classification as non-representational, or non-objective art, they are unique by reason of the fact that Mr. Bragdon is a skilled mathematician and geometer as well as an artist. He does not wish these paintings to be viewed, however, from any other standpoint than that of their intrinsic beauty—their purely aesthetic appeal. He believes that mathematical truth is at the root of all beauty, and that in the same sense that music may be said to be the beauty of mathematics made audible, so are these paintings mathematics made visible. After having made many hundred drawings, Mr. Bragdon made the paintings here and now exhibited, which from one point of view might be regarded as so many 'stills' of color symphonies seen by the author 'in his mind’s eye.' One of the pioneers in the new art of Color Music, Mr. Bragdon has from far back employed his spare time and his spare money in the construction of one “color-organ” after another, in which it was his idea to add luminosity, color, rhythm, mobility, to his designs derived from mathematical sources. Dove and Georgia O'Keeffe, John Marin aligned himself with the avant-garde circle surrounding Alfred Stieglitz. While Marin's favorite subjects were landscapes and seascapes, particularly Maine marines, he applied to them the modernist sensibilities that he absorbed from European masters like Cézanne, whose first one-man show was at Stieglitz's Gallery 291 in 1911. The island that Marin depicts here is one that he purchased in 1914 immediately after getting married. It is off the coast of Maine, near Portland. The Maine landscape drew Marin back throughout his life. A chief characteristic of twentieth century painting has been the practice of artists to transform subject with emotion, or as Marin's fellow painter Arthur Dove describes it, to pull the subject matter out and leave the sensation. Here, Marin sketches in the bare bones of his island but then folds it in as part of an all-over expression of action and energy, as if to suggest that the land mass is one with the wind and the waves. He recalled happy moments there in brilliant watercolors, so remarkable in their energy and hue that they were likened, in Prendergast's day, to "an explosion in a color factory." Trained as a theater poster painter, Prendergast became extraordinarily facile in watercolor, and he employed it throughout his career. The fluid medium was especially appropriate to Prendergast's expressions of the momentary, as the dance of light across the landscape and the rhythmic movements of bathers and picnickers could be suggested in quick dashes of luminous color. Under the influence of French post-impressionistic painting, Prendergast's watercolors became increasingly abstract. This late example is typical in its brevity. The design is realized through a loose pattern of strong primary and secondary colors set against the bright white ground. Much of the sheet has been left to create scattered highlights and to heighten the viewer's awareness of the work as pure paint on paper. The series was exhibited in 1941-42 in Hartford, New York City, and finally in Rochester at the Memorial Art Gallery. The Mathematical Abstractions were best described by the artist in the 1941-42 exhibition brochure: "These fifteen water-color paintings represent the final distillation of Mr. Bragdon’s creative ability in a field which he has made his own. Although susceptible of classification as non-representational, or non-objective art, they are unique by reason of the fact that Mr. Bragdon is a skilled mathematician and geometer as well as an artist. He does not wish these paintings to be viewed, however, from any other standpoint than that of their intrinsic beauty—their purely aesthetic appeal. He believes that mathematical truth is at the root of all beauty, and that in the same sense that music may be said to be the beauty of mathematics made audible, so are these paintings mathematics made visible. After having made many hundred drawings, Mr. Bragdon made the paintings here and now exhibited, which from one point of view might be regarded as so many 'stills' of color symphonies seen by the author 'in his mind’s eye.' One of the pioneers in the new art of Color Music, Mr. Bragdon has from far back employed his spare time and his spare money in the construction of one “color-organ” after another, in which it was his idea to add luminosity, color, rhythm, mobility, to his designs derived from mathematical sources. Convinced, after many failures, that the most satisfactory way in which this might be accomplished was by the animated cartoon technique, he made a study of it with this in view, and tried to interest the moving picture people in his idea. None of them were prepared, however, to invest the necessary amount of money in what they regarded as an uncertain venture. Walt Disney, meantime, a free agent, with the means at his disposal, had gone ahead and in certain parts of “Fantasia”—notably in the “sound-track” sequence—approximated some of the color-music effects which Mr. Bragdon had had in mind."
