His print Corner Shadows plays with ambiguity in its use of flickering light and figures gliding through darkness. In his study The Dark Side of the Screen: Film Noir, film historian Foster Hirsch suggests that Lewis’s work, as well as work by other New York artists including Edward Hopper and John Sloan, contains ‘anticipations and echoes of the noir city.’ Edginess, obscured faces and figures, and looming shadows heighten the anxiety that the work communicates. Corner Shadows was issued by the Print Club of Cleveland as its presentation print for 1930, and is considered Lewis’s most important print commission. The accession logbook says that 50.52 was assigned to a lithograph entitled "Chloe" by Daniel J. Murphy, gift of Emily Sibley Watson, deaccessioned 4/11/89. The Art Committee minutes for 4/11/89 list Chloe on a list of duplicate prints approved for deaccession. The accession number on the list is given as 50.53, a typo which is corrected on later documents related to the deaccession. The deaccession file in the registrar''s office contains records that show that the print was sold at auction by Winter Associates, Plainville, CT, at auction #197 on 9/25/89. An un-numbered print of Tuttle''s "Raven on Stump" was sent by MAG to Winter Associates in the same shipment (outgoing 4023), and sold at the same sale. There is no source for this print indicated on the documentation, but as no accession number is cited, it was apparently not deaccessioned; it is listed as "anonymous gift" which generally means "found in collection." Further research is needed to determine where the Tuttle print now 50.52 originally came from. In this etching, his dexterous attention to detail in the close-up view of this remote cottage and haybarn is visually reinforced by the contrasting hazy, distant portrayal of the surrounding landscape. The city of Amsterdam, identifiable by its church towers, appears at a far distance in the left background. On the right side of the etching, Rembrandt has included an image of the Castle Kostverloren, a well-known landmark along the Amstel River. Although both the city and the castle would have been easily recognized by the artist’s contemporaries, neither can be seen from a single viewpoint. As was often the case with Dutch landscape artists during the 1600s, here Rembrandt created an imaginary setting for the subject of his etching, but one composed of sites that would have been familiar to his audience. (He would eventually complete one hundred twenty-three intaglios and woodcuts, more than eleven hundred lithographs, and thirty-eight illustrated books.) He had arrived there with an autobiographical manuscript he had been working on since 1911. The gallerist Paul Cassirer saw the text, My Life, and hoped to publish a translation of it that would include prints by Chagall. Responding immediately to this new medium of printmaking, the artist completed his first etchings within three weeks. They were issued as a portfolio without text, due to translation difficulties with Chagall''s unusual prose. Drawing on vivid childhood memories of village life in Vitebsk, the artist depicted himself, his wife and child, his parents, his childhood home, local figures such as the teacher of the Talmud, and events that had taken place there. https://www.moma.org/collection/works/22260 ", "Images": [ { "ImagePath" : "https://webkiosk.gallerysystems.com/Media/images/49.89_A2.jpg", "ThumbnailPath" : "https://webkiosk.gallerysystems.com/Media/Thumbnails/49.89_A2.jpg", "PreviewPath" : "https://webkiosk.gallerysystems.com/Media/Previews/49.89_A2.jpg", "IIIF_URL": "http://iiif.gallerysystems.com/49.89_A2.jpg", "IsPrimary" : "1", "_SurrogateID" : "32626", "Image_Type" : "digital image", "Photo_Credit" : "", "Remarks" : "", "View" : "" } , ] },{ "embark_ID" : 8997, "URL" : "https://webkiosk.gallerysystems.com/Objects-1/info/8997", "Disp_Access_No" : "1951.22", "_AccNumSort1" : "", "Disp_Create_DT" : "1924", "_Disp_Start_Dat" : "1924", "_Disp_End_Date" : "1924", "Disp_Title" : "The Acrobat", "Alt_Title" : "", "Obj_Title" : "", "Series_Title" : "", "Disp_Maker_1" : "Marc Chagall", "Sort_Artist" : "Chagall, Marc", "Disp_Dimen" : "16 3/8 x 12 1/2 in. Rembrandt has subtly manipulated the scene into a carefully composed and extended horizontal panorama. He uses diagonal lines to indicate divisions in the fields. Horizontal lines showing property divisions and the woods also serve to slow the viewer’s gaze. The addition of drypoint, or lines scratched in the plate without the use of acid, heightens the contrast between light and shadow. The title for this print comes from the author of a 1751 catalogue of Rembrandt’s prints. He mistook this landscape for the property of the goldweigher, the Receiver General Jan Uytenbogaert, who was the subject of one of Rembrandt’s portraits. The Goldweigher’s Field actually shows the estate of the merchant Christoffel Thijs, who sold Rembrandt his house in 1639 and to whom Rembrandt was in debt.
