Mahonri Young

(Salt Lake City, UT, 1877 - 1957, Norwalk, CT)

The grandson of Mormon leader Brigham Young, Mahonri Young was born in Utah but moved to New York City in pursuit of a larger community of artists. There, he enrolled in New York's Art Students League, where he later became an instructor. After studying at the Academie Julian in Paris, Young returned to New York. Although he was one of the organizers of the 1913 Armory Show, which shocked the American art world with its modernist works, Young's work remained grounded in the realist tradition.
