William Cogswell

(Sandusky, NY, 1819 - 1903, Pasadena, CA)

He taught himself portrait painting in the 1830s while working in Buffalo, NY. He worked as a professional artist in New York City, St. Louis and Washington. He exhibited at the National Academy and the American Art-Union. In 1873 he moved to California, where he spent the rest of his life. His best-known work is a portrait of Abraham Lincoln in the White House Collection. His portraits also include Presidents Grant and McKinley.
