John Scholl

(Germany, 1827 - 1916)

"John Scholl was born in Würtemburg, Germany, in 1827, and died around 1916. A carpenter by trade, he emigrated to the United States in 1853, settling in the forest region of Germania, Pennsylvania. He cleared his own land, built his own house as well as others, built the village church, the local brewery, and the general store. He did his fanciful carvings between 1907 and 1916, after his retirement at the age of 80. His only tool was a jackknife. His motifs derive from traditional Pennsylvania German designs: the dove, bird-of-paradise, tulip, anchor, peacock, star-crossed circle, and swan, generally embellished with Victorian fretwork of his own design. He never sold or gave away his works, and his entire collection of some 40 pieces remained intact in the possession of his children and grandchildren until recent years." --Hemphill, Herbert W., Jr. Twentieth-century American folk art and artists, p. 31
