Jefferson Gauntt

(1806 - 1864)

The Dixon family portraits (52.35, 52.36, 42.45) are unsigned. Based on comparisons with work in other collections, it is thought that Jefferson Gauntt painted these portraits. Gauntt studied and exhibited at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in Philadelphia after which he spent several years traveling along the East Coast painting portraits, eventually settling in Brooklyn. His works are in the Boston Museum of Fine Arts and Brooklyn Museum collections. If the attribution to Jefferson Gauntt is correct, the Gallery owns three of only thirteen known paintings by him. His portraiture reflects a trend away from the early American linear folk style to a more realistic, idealizing style of European portraits. Colleen Piccone, Curatorial Dept. Oct. 2010
