This prints by Hugh Botts captures a despair common in Depression-era artwork. Yet, the artist provides a glimmer of hope – visible at the top of Fortune Teller is a New York Times headline referring to the federal work relief programs to hire Americans. In 1936 the Roosevelt Administration founded the Works Progress Administration (WPA) as part of the New Deal. Arts projects were included in this program and artists, including Hugh Botts, were hired by the thousands.
