Henry Emerson Tuttle was well-known for his drypoint prints of birds. In the 1930s and 1940s, he was Curator of Prints at Yale University Art Gallery, and the first president of the Artists Association of Nantucket. His work was also included in several books of poetry and prose. This print, for example, was used as an illustration for Samuel Scoville, Jr.'s narrative "Spirit of the Swamp" (Atlantic Monthly Press, 1929) about adventures in the wild in search of birds and other animals.
