Uzi Buzgalo is a leading figure in the contemporary Deaf art community. In this portrait, Buzgalo celebrates George Veditz, Deaf educator and advocate who was president of the National Association of the Deaf (NAD) in the early 1900s. Veditz is credited for his innovative use of the still-new technology of film to preserve and promote sign language in this country. These films of highly-skilled signers communicating about a variety of subjects became incredibly influential in spreading American Sign Language, and empowering the Deaf and hard-of-hearing community. Rochester is home, of course, to a dynamic Deaf population.
