Growing up in Rochester, Unique Fair-Smith attended the World of Inquiry School No. 58, just down the street from the Memorial Art Gallery, and he received his Master’s in Fine Arts from Rochester Institute of Technology in 2021.
In 2021, Fair-Smith’s The Eclectic Man was exhibited in the 67th Rochester-Finger Lakes Exhibition. Though relatively small in size, the presence and impact of this portrait was felt by many visitors to that exhibition. Fair-Smith seeks to depict his sitters on their own terms as much as possible: “This portrait of my friend Jordan Whiteside-Johnson captures his dynamic nature, and places him within the canon of fine art in a way that has not always been allowed to communities of color. I hope other people can see this work and feel empowered, my message is that people like Jordan are present, noteworthy, and powerful.”
